Open Call to DAO Council Nominations
The Decentraland DAO is excited to announce an open call for candidates to join the Council—a strategic governing body elected by the community, responsible for shaping the future of the DAO. This is a unique opportunity to directly influence the direction of Decentraland by ensuring alignment with the DAO’s mission, setting long-term goals, and maintaining transparency and accountability in all processes.
The Council will play a pivotal role in overseeing the DAO’s priorities, including potentially the Executive Arm, which will enable the DAO to undertake new and strategic projects.
Council Composition
The Council will consist of five subject matter experts with diverse backgrounds, including:
- Strategic Management & Business
- Finance
- Creativity
- Technology
- Community Building
Council Members must deeply understand Decentraland’s technology, audience, and stakeholders. The Council should have representation from the Decentraland Foundation, MANA/LAND holders, developers, creators, and the wider Decentraland community.
As a security measure, elected Council members will have to disclose their real names and provide a valid photo ID to be shared with the rest of the elected Council members.
As this is the first time the Council is being formed, members will also need to share their identities and ID with the Decentraland Foundation until the DAO establishes a formal legal entity. Once the DAO sets up its legal structure, it will take responsibility for safeguarding the KYC information of Council members.
Council Responsibilities
Council Members will:
Strategic Leadership
- Define the DAO’s direction by drafting and presenting strategic guidelines within the first 60 days of the Council’s formation.
- Highlight potential focus areas and long-term goals to drive Decentraland’s growth.
Oversight
- Recruit, guide, and, if necessary, replace the Executive Director of the Executive Arm.
- Conduct quarterly meetings with the Executive Director to review progress and provide guidance.
- Approve and publish the Annual Strategic Execution Plan and Budget.
- Review, approve, and maintain a Treasury Management Strategy to ensure the DAO’s financial sustainability.
Community Accountability
- Publish quarterly updates detailing the Council’s decisions, operations, treasury status, and individual contributions.
- Foster transparency by engaging with the community and ensuring alignment with the DAO’s mission.
Council Authority
The Council will:
- Define strategic goals and priorities for the DAO.
- Oversee the Executive Arm to facilitate efficient project execution.
- Approve annual strategies and budgets.
- Safeguard the alignment of DAO operations with its mission.
Election and Dismissal Process
Once the Open Call period closes, the DAO Committee will create one Hiring proposal per candidate. Then the community will vote openly and the 5 members who got the most VP are the ones that will be chosen. Community members can vote for as many candidates as they want.
Election Process
- Open Call Period: Open for three weeks.
- Voting: VP holders can vote on candidates who meet eligibility criteria.
- Threshold: A minimum of 6 million VP is required for election.
- Selection: The top 5 eligible candidates with the most accumulated VP will get elected.
- Voting Period: 28 days.
Dismissal Process
- Members can be dismissed via:
- Community vote (6 million VP threshold + 28-day voting period).
- Majority decision by other Council members.
Future Councils may propose changes to these processes, but the fundamentals of hiring and dismissal via open voting must remain untouched unless a change is proposed and approved through the regular Governance process subject to community voting.
If less than 5 candidates get to the VP threshold required to get elected, a shortened Open Call will be created for new candidates to apply or reapply to the elections.
Compensation
Council Members will receive a monthly stipend of USD 1,000 (payable in MANA) to recognize their time, and dedication.
How to Apply
To apply, candidates must create a post in the Governance category on the Decentraland forum using the dao-council-elections tag and must be titled “[candidate username] - DAO Council Postulation”. The post must include:
- A detailed resume highlighting relevant expertise.
- A cover letter describing your vision for Decentraland’s future.
- Evidence of your understanding of Decentraland’s ecosystem and commitment to its growth.
- Any other information you consider relevant to back your application.
Candidates who are or were part of the Decentraland Foundation or any Decentraland DAO core units or committees must disclose this in their nomination post.
Note: Disclosing personal information is not required at the application stage. Candidates will only be required to disclose their identities with the rest of the Council members if they get elected.
