Description

The purpose of this grant is the following:

  1. Market Decentraland as the HUB for Comedy in the Metaverse to both Comics and Fans alike – this will include 3 months of pre-promotion of Decentraland through the Gas Digital Network (podcasts/socials/live events) – Minimum of 30,000,000 impressions.

  2. Decentral Comedy will have behind the scenes access to the festivities with our very own film crew to capture the full experience to be streamed as content into Decentraland - The Decentraland Backstage Pass.

  3. An onboarding station/booth to attract both high end comics and fans to personally walk them through the experience of what Decentraland has to offer.

  4. Build a comedy open-air amphitheater to showcase the content and have available for future stand-up shows and festivals.

They say comedy and laughter bring people together, and we strongly believe that! Our vision is to create memorable content that visitors can share and enjoy within the Decentraland community.

This one-of-a-kind experience will bring the sold-out festival to a large, global audience and mainly bring fans and comics into DECENTRLAND.

Full line of the festival can be found here:

This project will give everyone in the Decentraland a backstage pass within Decentraland to their top-tier stand-up favorites, while providing a reason to socialize and gather with community members.

We propose to build an amphitheater that comedy fans can convene at to watch the hilarity at Skankfest ensue, while also providing the structure to create a comedy hub for the release of fresh content and events in the future.

Specification

Acquiring funding through the DAO will make it possible for Decentral Comedy to handle all facets of planning, marketing, content curation, content production and allow Metaverse Architects to take care of development. The following is a breakdown of key areas we will focus on:

Planning:
Skankfest features a full lineup of talented acts across 6 stages, over a three-day period. Decentral Comedy will plan the full marketing campaign utilizing the Gas Digital Network to promote Decentraland as the hub of comedy in the metaverse:

● We will promote that in order to gain backstage access to this sold out show, patrons will have to visit Decentral Comedy’s Skankfest DCL experience
● We will prepare to have a full team at the event (including a VR camera) to capture the best of what Skankfest has to offer
● In anticipation of the event, there will be a 3 month onboarding period to introduce comedy fans into the Decentral Comedy space
● This will also include the huge logistical effort to ensure the smooth running of the DCL Skankfest schedule

Marketing:
The robust marketing strategy will include:

● Official marketing through Skankfest and on official branding channels
● Set up of a Decentraland Green Room Podcast Station at Skankfest along with branding and signage
● In-person attendance by the Decentral Comedy team
● First access to behind-the-scenes areas to generate awareness amongst comedians and attendees that the content will be accessible on an ongoing basis in DCL
● 4 All-Access passes as a giveaway prize on DCL or social media (valued at $500 USD per ticket)
● Logo will appear on all promotional material
● Post Festival Email Featuring Decentraland

Content:
Decentral Comedy will secure access to the exclusive Backstage At Skankfest content. This content will be packaged and produced for an exclusive premiere in DCL

We will also capture one-on-one interviews with top comics that includes taking questions from users live in DCL/discord and connecting the fans in DCL directly with the comics.

Development:
Property for the build will either be rented or purchased. It will be developed to look like a large amphitheater and feature a dynamic screen with live streaming capability, fitted with a high-quality sound system.

Cost Estimations:
Skankfest Access + DCL promo space: $65,000
Content Streaming + Video Capture: $23,500
Development/Build: $31,500

Personnel

This project is a collaborative endeavor between Decentral Comedy and Metaverse Architects.

Decentral Comedy is made up of a seasoned team that know “funny”. They are dedicated to bringing premier standup comedy into the metaverse and showcasing top tier international headliners and emerging talent. They are also the owners of the first comedy club in the metaverse.

Roadmap and milestones

This project will take 4 months to develop and can be broken down into monthly deliverables:

Month 1: Logistical and planning aspects are confirmed. The lineup schedule of The Skankfest DCL Experience is released. Our aggressive marketing strategy begins.

Month 2: Design of the build is complete. Further marketing campaigns are rolled out.

Month 3: All aspects of development are complete and have undergone rigorous testing. In addition, content at Skankfest is filmed and created.

Month 4: The Skankfest DCL Experience launches in Early November 2022

Hi ComedyMatrix,
Thank you for taking the time to write this proposal. Can you please give a more detailed breakdown of the expenses? When you say “Property for the build will either be rented or purchased” I get a huge red flag. I feel the decision whether you are trying to rent land as compared to buying land should be decided before you submit a proposal. Land rental could be $1000’s and a land purchase of this size could be the entire $65,000 you itemize for the “DCL promo space”. If you decide to rent the land, what happens to the remaining money? You’ll find that many members in the community do not feel that using DAO proposals to acquire land is an appropriate use of funds. Additionally it looks like you’ve allocated a salary for your development/build team; are you anticipating any other members of the team putting on an event of this size and duration will collect a salary? You say that that acquiring funds through the DAO will “make it possible for Decentral Comedy to handle all facets of planning, marketing, content curation, and content production”, however I do not see where these specific roles are broken down within your expenses, nor any detailed information on any members of your team. 4 months is a long commitment to team members if they are working for free.

Again, thank you for putting the time into this proposal, and hopefully you can clear up some of these questions with a more detailed expense list.

Kindly, Canessa

Hi Canessa,

Hope you are well, and we thank you for your value input and being an active member of the DAO. Hoping this response clears up the above questions you may have.

Can you please give a more detailed breakdown of the expenses?

Skankfest Access + Attendance: $65,000
This is the direct cost for the promotion of Decentral Comedy and Decentraland for the two and a half months leading up to Skankfest through GAS Digital and the 30 comedy podcasts it has on its network + the in-person promotion at Skankfest + the behind-the-scenes DCL team to capture content that will only be available to watch in Decentraland = New Users.
The actual breakdown of the off is as follows:

Skankfest features a full lineup of talented acts across 6 stages, over a three-day period. See promo of festival above. Decentral Comedy will plan the full marketing campaign utilizing the Gas Digital network:

*3 Full Days Oct 14-16 + Thursday night Opening Party - backstage access for DCL/Decentral Comedy/Metaverse Architects.
*Skankfest - Sold out 5000 tickets in 19 minutes.
*Non-Stop Comedy and Music featuring up to 7 different stages and rooms.
*Digital Footprint of Skankfest Vegas is expected to eclipse 30 million Impressions – Decentraland/DC will be included as a main sponsor on all of that.
*Video Footage and Pictures will feature your logo and team in live social media postings
*Themed Events and Digital Content
*Early and Special Access to all events and ability to interact with the crowd previous to shows.

Marketing: The robust marketing strategy will include:
Official marketing through Skankfest and on official branding channels
A Decentraland podcast station for original comedy content
In-person attendance by the Decentral Comedy team for onboarding comics/fans
First access to behind-the-scenes areas to generate awareness amongst comedians and attendees that the content will be accessible on an ongoing basis in DCL
4 all access passes to do a giveaway in DCL or on social media these passes are worth $500 USD per ticket and the festival is sold out – cross promote comedy fans and DCL.
Decentraland Green Room Podcast Station – first of its kind.
Branding and Signage in the Green Room as well as a dedicated space to create a Decentraland Podcast Station. (Your team is further able to integrate and create spaces where creators can have live access to Decentraland.)
Logo will appear on all promotional material
Post Festival Email Featuring Decentraland

The goal is to promote Decentraland as the Hub of Comedy in the Metaverse.
Decentraland and Decentral Comedy will be promoted to comedians and fans alike for the 2.5 months leading up to the festival a one of the major sponsors. Through out those months we will onboard new fans into DCL to as we already have a strong comedy presence, with over 50 shows scheduled until the end of the year in DCL. Then with the ability to offer a backstage experience to Skankfest post festival that can only be seen in DCL we plan to onboard many more. We will have a full team on the ground (including a VR camera specialist) with exclusive backstage access to capture the best of what Skankfest has to offer. Excusive interviews with top comics/taking questions from users live in DCL/discord and connecting the fans in DCL directly with the comics.

Content Streaming + Video Capture: $23,500
We will have a full team onsite to capture content exclusively for Decentraland capturing content (which in turn will encourage the attendee and GAS digital fans to find and try DCL to access that footage) we will also be capturing content with a 3D camera for future use once DCL introduces VR capabilities.
Our team will then be executing all postproduction which includes editing, mixing/mastering, and color correction to debut the exclusive content in DCL.

Development/Build: $31,500
I think this is where your biggest concern here lies, and I would love to clear this up. We are purchasing the build of the Amphitheatre from Metaverse architects for $31,500. At this moment we don’t have the amount of land parcels needed to deploy the build we are planning, so Metaverse Architects have offered for us to use/rent their LAND for the new amphitheater to be positioned in their space for the rental fee of $1 for the first year which is included in the price above.

We have been in the DCL space for over a year now and have our Decentral Comedy club at the BLOCK and have been able to cultivate relationships with partners which have been generous enough to use their land for almost no cost/or at no cost as they see value in the programs and content we bring into Decentraland for the whole community to enjoy.

With that all said, I would like to make it clear that NONE of this grant funding is going to the purchase of any Land.

Additionally, it looks like you’ve allocated a salary for your development/build team; are you anticipating any other members of the team putting on an event of this size and duration will collect a salary? You say that that acquiring funds through the DAO will “make it possible for Decentral Comedy to handle all facets of planning, marketing, content curation, and content production”, however I do not see where these specific roles are broken down within your expenses, nor any detailed information on any members of your team. 4 months is a long commitment to team members if they are working for free.

Decentral Comedy is a small team that has been operation in DCL for over a year now working predominantly self funding our operations, through our partner projects such as Cottage Comedy and Silver Drop Media; investing over 200K of content and our teams time into this space because we believe this is where the future of comedy lies. And of course, this program leads to new revenue streams for Decentral Comedy that will sustain our team over the course of the next year or so at the point in time.

Our team has over 20+ years hosting comedy festivals and producing shows with top-tier comedy talent from across North America. We have developed a strong network of comedians, comedy clubs, recording labels, studios, and live IRL venues to attract talent in to DCL and proven we can do it.

Our team:
Tyler Morrison - 20 years of stand-up comedy and performance/production to the organization. Access to premier international talent having produced over 100 comedians and is a two-time Juno nominated producer and social media rainmaker and co-owner of Cottage Comedy.

Jade Sebek – First and foremost a massive comedy fan! A 15-year veteran in events sales and production, working with some of the largest events companies and conferences in the world.
Tim Morrison – A 20-year manager of operations for the fortune 500 company Unilock, and a key co-founder of DC and co co-owner of Cottage Comedy.
Danny Mendlow - A developer in Film, Television and Digital projects and a Digital Marketing Strategist.
Tyler Shazma - A two-time Juno nominated producer and owner of Silver Drop Media who has worked on several major television productions most notably the new series This is The Thing! on Bell FIBE TV currently going into its second season.

Our key DCL partners Decentral Games, Metaverse Architects and of course Patrick/@blockchainpat/patmacs#8139 - our biggest supporters and friends!

I hope that answers your questions and please feel free to connect with me at anytime. Again, appreciate your diligence as I would be doing the same. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask and thank you again,

Jade

First, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to write and publish this proposal and for your commitment to Decentraland. Your efforts to grow the comedy space have not gone unseen.

That being said, I’m not satisfied with your breakdown of the expenses you provided to Canessa. When asking for such a large amount of money, its necessary to provide in depth details of the specifics. You opted to use a lot of words when what we are asking for is numbers. Tangible, digestible numbers. It’s just way too much money to ask, for what Decentraland will be rewarded with in return for the funds. An estimated 30m impressions is truly impressive, but in reality what does that translate to in terms of new Daily Average Users?

An average CMP advertising with Google is roughly $2.80/CMP. (1000 impressions) Based off the estimated impressions in this proposal the CMP from the relatively niche platform would be $4/CMP. What makes the Gas Digital Network CMP more valuable than Google?

All this aside, what does a CMP really translate to in terms of new DAU? There is nothing to base it off of in terms of getting predominately web 2/IRU consumers to adopt something as new and scary as a decentralized web 3 social networking platform. I apologize, but its a no from me.

Thank you for your feedback. I’m voting NO because I don’t see the expenses broken down well enough to justify this large sum of money. From what you quoted, it looks like you’re spending DAO funds to send the DCL/Decentral Comedy/Metaverse Architect team with backstage access to the event? And did you already buy the 5000 tickets? If not, I don’t understand why you included that as an expense in your breakdown of funds. To me it looks like you copied and pasted the description for the event in your breakdown of expenses, as seen below:

I will be voting NO on this proposal because I do not think it’s fair that the persons set to benefit from this proposal passing financially, are the ones indeed passing it basically by themselves. This does not make decentralization. This makes the most money wins, and is not best use of DAO funds and the DAO proposal system. This sets up to make those with power more powerful, and disenfranchises the general voters of the DAO.

It’s becoming quite alarming that this is the second instance I have seen of this happening in a few short weeks. I’m sorry to the Decentral Comedy team that this is my reasoning, because I do believe in what you all would like to present, but DO NOT agree with abuse of a decentralized system, through VP whales.

lol imagine voting your own pay day (Vroomway Play 2 Earn) Vroomway only got 60k and will probably put out ten times as much entertainment as this in the long run. What we are now seeing is the corruption of this vote system. Where one can reach out to a whale and grease their palm to insta pass a proposal. The 31 thousand Collab with Metaverse Architects for the vote power buy is fn hilariously out in plain site. Especially after the self pass vote for the POI. Utterly disgusting and the community if paying attention should respond in kind. @AaronLeupp @stateless @CarlFravel @MorrisMustang

haha I already tweeted this March 1st. Thanks for callin things out and questions as always to try to keep the DAO process solid as possible. Wish there was a more logical system in place but tbh i can’t think of one i have tried lol. Maybe minimum active DCL wallets as well on top of the one whale vote? I really don’t know lol. These mostly one wallet with not much decentraland presents or proof of concept always sus but thing is at least it has yes’s in lower double digests so they could have demonstrated some type of value to some during campaigning and I just didn’t missed the memo. Funny thing is several others even higher things have passed by one or two whale votes with like not even double digit yes’s lol wild times https://twitter.com/AaronLeupp/status/1498867585529495555

Voted no, not because I don’t like the idea, but because this seems like it should be a privately funded project.

I’d likely invest in a project like this, but with my own funds.

I feel the same as stateless - it’s not that the project is bad but it doesn’t feel like it’s a good fit for the DAO to be funding, at least not this much. If it were a 60k grant I think I would feel different (and it could just as easily be passed by a single vote).

Asking for to much, which looks like someone will be getting some padded pockets. Or a really nice payed vacation by the dao.

Simply because something is allowable, doesn’t make it right

It is currently within the rules to approach an individual or organization with millions in VP to vote for a proposal, likely ensuring its passage, and in exchange sending funds back to the wallet that delivered the millions in VP.

A company could even build a business around this seemingly guaranteed method of pay to play kickbacks. The proposers get an injection of funds. The mega-wallet gets a nice payday and uses the same VP to deplete the DAO of more funds with the next proposal.

How much funding will Metaverse Architects receive from the proposed $120,000 grant amount? What work have they completed? What work remains for them to complete before they receive their payment?

Questions about the allocation of remaining funds after Metaverse Architects gets their check:

What’s the cost per user? How many dollars are you going to spend to activate a new user and convert them to a daily active user? How does this exclusive, captured content equal new users?

How does any of this bring users and resources to Decentraland? Do you have a tracking mechanic that will identify any user in DCL as one originating from your marketing or your event?

Some additional questions about your organization’s community involvement:

There’s over 5,000 wearables in the DCL Marketplace. MANA is the in world currency for Decentraland. Will any attendees of Skankfest have MANA to spend in DCL? Music NFTs are a growing offering in the web3 space. Do any of the comedians offer Comedy NFTs? If so, what utility do they have?

What incentives do you have for audience members to come back to DCL? Who’s your community manager? Who in the existing DCL community have you reached out to for involvement in this project? Will there be any collaborations with any one of the established DCL entertainment venues? Any wearables you plan to offer that are being designed by a single wearable creator in this space? Do you have a phygital tie-in for this event?

Lastly, it is offensive to have the VP whale vote to pass this proposal before a single line of dialogue happened. It reeks of a presumed, instant, unopposed passage. I can see why that expectation may exist since previous [proposal + VP whale vote = passage] offerings have gone virtually unopposed. I encourage you and every proposer of Tier 5 grants to engage with this Decentraland Community. Let’s discuss how we can grow this world together.

Voted no because all of the price points raise red flags:
$65k for 30,000,000 impressions isn’t realistic at all, if it were, everyone would be using it and Google Ads would be dead. There are ad spots you could rent in Time Square that would be significantly cheaper and return 10x the actual impressions.

$23,500 is a lot of money for video capturing. Having a few operators and rented equipment could easily get this number down to less than $5,000. Especially for a small event like this one. I use to work in media production and have been to several conventions as a camera op.

$31,500 is a really impressive price tag for a theatre. I’d be interested in seeing the specs/size of this build. We have modeled 256 square meters (4x4 parcel) at Vroomway 6 times and it hasn’t cost near that amount.

I also voted no because of the consistent abuse of the DAO system in trying to fund anything under the sun. A convention to market your business and your partners should be taken from your marketing budget. DAO in my eyes is for community start-ups or continued effort from proven metrics. I personally have never been to any comedy event in DCL since joining in November of 2021 nor have I seen marketing on any of my feeds for comedy events.

I don’t like when proposals promise to onboard x amount of users because there aren’t any proven metrics, yet, that can vouch for that. It’s all web2 speculation. But we’ve all learned that web2 doesn’t always work in web3. Just because you throw an obscene amount of money at something doesn’t mean it’s going to stick. What is your assurance that it will work?

To all DAO members and the entire Decentraland Community.

First off, we would like to thank everyone who took the time to read our proposal and provide constructive criticism on some very important issues that probably even before this grant was presented needed to be brought to light.

Our team at Decentral Comedy has been watching this unfold over the past week and we have taken everything you have said into consideration and very much recognize that the current structure of how grants are awarded could be a determent to the future of Decentraland.

Therefore, we have decided with our partner Metaverse Architects to step away from this current proposal and resubmit under a different structure, taking in all your concerns.

With that said, I would like to address a few things here, as we truly believe the proposal we put forward, has value and benefits to the DAO and the community at large and that we acted with full transparency with the relationships we built but clearly see how this came across as a direct conflict of interest.

We went into this project as partners with Metaverse Architects as we were lucky enough to have come across Sean and his team when we were vetting companies to build our podcast studio. They did an excellent job, worked great with our team, saw our vision, understood comedy, and provided a great product within a short timeline – bottom line, great partnership. We were transparent about our partnership in the grant, we had no intention of hiding that – but now with everything that has transpired, Metaverse Architects will act as consultants on helping us put together a tender for the build component of the grant to provide equal opportunity to all companies in the space.

Now, I would very much like to thank everyone who voted in favour of our proposal! We truly appreciate your support with the understanding of the long-term vision of what we have been trying to build. Decentral Comedy has been bringing free comedy content to Decentraland for the past year, we now have weekly shows in our space, we have done multiple comedy festivals and have used our real-world relationships and investments to bring content to the DCL community and we have learned to how to present DCL as a space for comics to feel comfortable in releasing their content.

Our vison is clear, we want to make Decentraland the hub for Comedy in the Metaverse.

To do this, we need to market DECENTRALAND to comedians and comedy fans alike. The marketing play we proposed above is more then just impressions and having a banner on websites, its personally being able to onboard and introduce 150 top level comics (which will include their fanbase) and 5000 live fans to the world of Decentraland, sending the message that Decentraland is where comedy lives and thrives in the Metaverse.

We hope you keep an eye out for our resubmission and I personally welcome any questions you may have, please feel free to reach out to me through discord. We love being a part of the Decentraland community and truly believe we can extend this universe to comedians and comedy fans out there who are looking to find a safe space to laugh!

Thank you all again, I look forward to your comments on the resubmission,
Jade

This is so good, thank you for sharing insight. As mentioned in the community discussion the tactics being used in the Dao by MetaArch is costing brand integrity and possible entry into a space that’s so new. The cost of loosing brand trust at such an early age of development is crucial because no money can’t buy that back. (Which is what is currently happening with Metaverse Architects and any of their clients including Decentral Comedy).

I would recommend recover your brand and partner with an agency that knows the basics of a platform, regardless of what you’ve been promised it’s not worth losing your opportunity in the space and MetaArchs clearly doesnt have that base knowledge.

Work with community and try not to take from it. DAO money hasn’t come from an angel investor but we the users, our hard work and % of our net worth.
Without a doubt this is an amazing case study for brands entering any metaverse platform of what not to do. If you need recommendations I know the community can help!

Do you guys have a front person for like outreach to the community? Is Tyler Morrison still the front man? I personally love watching Bert Kreischer “The Machine”. It did very much rub me wrong tho watching your affiliated party member self pass a POI and then come in and shamu tail the whole community like sharks, fish, plankton and krill dont matter to the eco system. Its a huge fail in part of what this is supposed to be. A firm or collective should very well watch its image in this community. I dont say supposed to be trying to gate keep ether. No one wants to have one person, group or entity with the ability to spit in the face of a collective DAO and rape funds. That literally breaks community. I personally like the build you all have. Like the ambition and that your trying to bring things to Decentraland I think many of us can respect that. I think many were rubbed wrong. If it passes it passes, but if not I think the community would support a different amount. Now people have to worry about and will be wallet tracking Metaverse Architects to make sure no bs happens integrity has been lost.
