[DAO:68e3b0e] DCL Global Recruiting & Onboarding Marketing Campaign Phygital T-shirt Contest

@Peanutbutta - yes, that’s the estimate for sending to 800 individuals worldwide

Hi @morph. Thanks for taking the time to read and vote on our proposal. We also appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback on you voting decision.

The team would be taking on a new project and would have to be compensated. We bring in our team as needed based on projects we have. Honestly, we don’t care for the 10% profits, however, in order for this initiative to be sustainable, we need to take on some sort of revenue from it. One of the biggest issues we’ve observed in the DAO is that people don’t build in sustainability efforts into their grant-funded projects. This would be a small revenue stream that could help fund future initiatives in an effort to avoid the need for grants.

It’s during this slower phase that we build and create products and solutions for the better times we know are coming. We understand the market is down. We have seen other projects not reap the results that truly reflects the amount of effort their teams put in for that very reason, however, we cannot time the market. Typically, when things “turn around” and are “doing well” (the market is flourishing, if you will), it’s too late to invest. Entry costs are a lot higher and rewards are not as high. Bigger companies will come in and innovate us smaller players out. Look at what happened with Meta. Had the market continued to propel, they have the ability (read: data, manpower, R&D, market support, and, most importantly, money) to overpower us. We have to build the infrastructure while others are focused on other initiatives. The gap we have observed and what we believe is the best opportunity is getting as many creators / builders onto and invested in our platform to keep them and have them bring other creators/builders to DCL to join them.

Although we disagree with your position, we respect it and your vote.

After reviewing the proposal more in-depth and taking into account your responses, I am voting no for the following reasons:

The proposal states that you will be distributing 800 t-shirts, 500 amongst the community (“event participants, foundation, members who participated in the contest, voting, hosting, tweeting, etc”) 100 for schools (no specifics on what schools or coding programs), 100 for your IRL event (no details on what the event is, date, location or expected attendance), and the last 100 for future distribution (“community leaders and members who host/attend web3 events, conferences, events promoting DCL, etc”). You stated that you will handle the allocation of the last 100 shirts you will “establish a request form and process for DCL members to follow”

The portion of your grant which promises to give 50% of proceeds from sales to the DAO and other proceeds to the developer and designer is not possible, as you have allocated the full supply for free distribution.

In phase 1 you state that you will recruit DCL community members to “promote the contest to their communities and followers across platforms such as DCL, Twitter and Discord” and in phase 2 you say “the contest will be promoted thru various channels, including social media and twitter spaces” then again, in phase 5 you pasted the exact same line… but the contest has already past, and the winners have been selected.

The marketing efforts in the slide titled “Ennova Onboarding Strategies” and most of the efforts you mentioned in your “Key Activities by Effort” slides are not mentioned or detailed at all in any phase of the roadmap.

The proposal is intermingled and vague… there is no clear distinction between the t-shirt contest (according to proposal is “open exclusively to developers who have previously created and listed wearables in the DCL marketplace”) and your IRL event (which promises to “onboard creative talent from all around the globe”). We have no date, location, title, event type, or how it correlates with the t-shirt contest or Decentraland.

We should not be spending 43K to market a t-shirt contest, that is only open to DCL developers, we are using our own community members to promote, and they are only getting 3K of that money.

You are asking us to provide merchandise and marketing dollars for an event and school programs without being presented even the most basic information about these portions of the proposal.

“Ennova will oversee and manage logistics of the 800 t-shirts, including transportation, storage, organization, and weekly deliveries, ensuring efficient distribution while handling the operational challenges involved”…

Spending 13K on “logistics of marketing materials” does not equate to “ensuring an efficient distribution” as the proposal claims. This is not a valuable use of DAO funds.

Logistics of Marketing Materials: $13,500
Social Media Manager: $5,100
SEO Strategy & Execution: $4,500
Content Creation: $4,000
DCL Community Member Contest Promoters: $3,000
Recruiting and Onboarding: $3,000
Analytics and Tracking: $3,000
Outreach (PR, platforms, podcast ads, etc.): $2,500
Social media promotion: $1,500
Email Marketing: $1,500
Platform Fees and Advertising: $1,500

In closing,

The DAO strategic planning working group has been researching, analysing and discussing ways to promote decentraland to developers, 3D modelers and graphic designers. We have caring, capable and active members that are committed to finding the most cost effective and efficient ways to market DCL to these communities, while guarding the treasury… and they are doing it without any grant funds.

If we want to distribute t-shirts I’m all for it… I want one… one for every day of the week!.. but we can do this more efficiently and cost effectively, with people we can trust to do what is right with the money and the merchandise. I ask the community to consider my comments before voting.

Cheers.

Are you part of this project? I am confused who you are.

You said your friends wouldnt want to wear the T shirts with Decentraland on it? So if you cant convince your friends to like DCL, why do you think you can convince creators to do so? What are you going to do tell them they can get free money if they come create in DCL?

To be honest, it’s not hard for creators to find out there is a grant program, we can run some paid promotions even $10k worth and still find creators who would be interested here.

Also what metrics do you plan on using to determine if this is a successful grant? What is your promise to the Holders? How many creators per week are you going to onboard?

Will you provide evidence of shipment?

@Tudamoon - Yes, we can. We are also prioritizing protecting the privacy of people and will share shipment details in a de-identified manner.

This is a large amount of money. I would feel more comfortable approving a grant for $10,000-$20,000, look at the impact and data that provides, and if the data show that it was impactful, come back and ask for more.

While I very much appreciate the goal of increasing Decentraland’s user base and community engagement, I have significant concerns about the budget of this project that lead me to vote no.

With over 15 years of experience teaching silkscreen and working in t-shirt design/printing, I know firsthand that 800 custom printed shirts could easily be produced for a fraction of the $17,600 proposed in this budget.

I agree with Canessa’s suggestion that a smaller grant would be more appropriate to test the impact and collect data for this. I would feel much more comfortable and would consider possibly approving a significantly lower budget version of this proposal.

Overall, I cannot approve what I consider an overpriced and potentially ineffective marketing spend given my background. I do appreciate the proactive effort by jEnnova and hope to see more cost-conscious community-building ideas brought forward

@Tudamoon - It appears you do not have an understanding of what was previously mentioned and are conflating two separate scenarios.

We have already shared the platform with our friends, and they are not being incentivized to join just for a shirt. Our project’s goals and our friends are mutually exclusive and should not be discussed as part of this proposal. Our proposal isn’t about bringing friends to DCL - again, the focus is creators. As amazing as our friends may be, they are not all interested in creating nor do they have the right skillset to do so successfully. That doesn’t make them any less of a friend.

Here’s an example to help clarify your confusion. If your previously mentioned theory is correct, that would mean that ALL of Lebron James’ friends should be in the NBA. Is that true? Of course not. Does that mean he isn’t one of the best players representing the sport? Of course not.

The thing is this project doesn’t exist to convince anyone of its or our worth. If you do not agree with it, we respect your decision.

As for the aforementioned comment, if true, we don’t see anyone doing it. If it isn’t hard, why isn’t anyone doing it? Especially for caring and loyal members to the DCL brand like you, it’s shocking to see no one is taking advantage of this option.

Successful execution of all portions of the roadmap, as required by the DAO.

We do not have Holders so no promises have been made to anyone.

The recruitment and onboarding period set forth in our project is specific to part of Phase 1 and 2 of the project. We cannot guarantee contest participation numbers, however, we are confident that our results will meet or exceed the expectations of the DAO and community.

Hi again, @CheddarQueso.

Thank you for restating portions of our project here. It will be helpful for the audience.

One thing I’d like to clear up is your comment about the school. We have a plan of the schools we want to distribute the shirts to, however, we are waiting to announce anything publicly as we do not want to go back on our word once we share we want to donate DCL branded shirts to students. What we can say is that it’s a cool plan and you all will like it!

As for this comment - I think you may have misunderstood the project. The wearables will be sold. The shirts will be given away. The proceeds from the wearables are going to the DAO (50%).

I will also clear up this misunderstanding. These are different phases with different activities.
Phase 1 is the pre-contest kick off, where we will promote the contest itself.
Phase 2 is when the contest is happening, so we will continue to promote it via all the channels mentioned.
Phase 5 is when the IRL event happens, so we will, again, do promotion via all channels mentioned for this event.
Please let me know if you still have any questions or confusion on this piece.

This is by design. The “Key Activities by Effort” is a high-level view of activities and the efforts our team will have to dedicate to them. The “Ennova Onboarding Strategies” table was created as a supplemental document to provide a more granular view of the first bullet of the strategy we have to onboard and recruit new graphic designers and 3D modelers/animators. We added this document to provide additional transparency.

I’m not sure what you mean by intermingled and vague. The activities are meant to be go hand in hand as they are part of this multi-faceted project. To make it easier to understand, I have provided a breakout below:

  1. We are going to promote a contest and DCL to recruit and onboard new creators/builders as well as promote the event to current creators/builders
  2. We will host the contest
  3. The community will vote on their favorite design
  4. A limited-edition wearable will be created with the winning design and sold on the DCL Marketplace
  5. A phygital t-shirt will be created with the winning design and given to community members
  6. An IRL event be hosted
  7. T-shirts will be distributed to DCL community members globally, students, etc. and during the IRL event

The members of the community are getting more than $3K of the money. The other big item you are missing is the additional creations that will be available in our platform because of the work the newly-onboarded creators/builders will do in the platform. We have also included our table with the value this project will bring to DCL inclusive of quantified dollars when applicable.

There are costs to shipping products globally. We will also be responsible for taking the products to the logistics vendor for shipment. Things have gotten more expensive to ship especially after COVID. In terms of value, I’m not sure we can quantify value the way you are doing so. This is a cost to the project. The value is the shirt people will receive which will be worn and utilized n amount of times.

We also attend and are active participants in these meetings. We helped create and elaborate upon a lot of the items found in the SWOT analysis and share your concerns. On the other hand, what we are doing today isn’t working. If we want to truly invest in our platform, we must challenge the status quo and do things outside of our comfort zone. We cannot continue to do the same thing over again and expect different results.

Thank you, again, for sharing your thoughts and taking the time to review our proposal! We appreciate you!

@Tudamoon - For more information about me, please refer to the Personnel section or reference page 7 → “Team Execution” section → bullet 1 of the full proposal document found in the Abstract.

Each attempt is a step to success! Wishing well and hope to see balanced proposal some day

I am not going to refer to a document you can edit at anytime. It should be a PDF.

Is that all your metrics? I am surprised that you dont have more to share being a web3 consulting company. Just to make sure I understand, all you care about is if the grant is successful in the eyes of the DAO without any other metrics?

How does the whole community benefit from 800 T shirts?

Who gets the profit from the wearables?

We cannot award grant money just because you say it’s “a cool plan and you all will like it”. We need details, which schools and what programs, what type of IRL event are you holding, where, when, how many in attendance, who else will be sponsoring, invited guests, etc.

If the shirts you are giving away are a “phygital” what digital wearable will they tie to if you are selling the wearable in the marketplace to other people? This doesn’t make any sense… a phygital is a digital item that has a physical counterpart in the real world. You are either attaching the shirts to the wearables or not, or giving the phygitals away, or not… you can’t do both.

Again, too many contradictions. You say that you are going to recruit creators by promoting DCL and this contest, but you also say the contest is only open to developers that have previously published in Decentraland.

You still give no information about your IRL event, but expect us to pay for marketing efforts to promote it.

There are costs for shipping items, yes… but there are also better, more cost effective ways of distributing t-shirts. @Peanutbutta offered some great alternatives, if the community is interested in merch. This is not a valuable use of DAO money.

Hi @Canessa. Thank you for reviewing and sharing your thoughts.

Our goal is to do something big and impactful for the platform which is reflected in the proposal and budget.

We appreciate your valuable perspective and will keep this in mind. Many thanks!

@Tudamoon - I referred you to both the full proposal link AND the uneditable Personnel section of the proposal (found by simply scrolling up and out of the Comments section).

Please read the full details there as it is, again, uneditable (and will match the Google Doc link). If you are unable to navigate this proposal, please let me know as I’d be happy to show you how to.

@Tudamoon - Please see my responses below:

As a consultant, one must hit the metrics of their clients. In this case, the DAO is our client. The measurement for success/adherence of the grant is the roadmap, so that is what we are using to measure success. If at any moment in the process that changes, we can pivot and adjust accordingly.

The whole community can participate as it is not meant for a specific community-type. Everyone is able to participate by voting for their favorite designer, registering for the competition, purchasing a limited-edition wearable, and/or even has a chance to order a free t-shirt. You just have to participate to be eligible to receive one.

We have addressed this question within our proposal. Were you able to read it? We also referenced it in previous comments.

It can be found in Table 1 (f) of our proposal. Please let me know if you are unable to find this information as I’d be happy to walk you through it.
