Should the following $5,000 grant in the In-World Content category be approved?

Abstract

This proposal asks the DAO for funding to create an exact two-story floorplan replica of a famous house shown annually on TV which cannot be named for trademark reasons. Perhaps you will recognize this house as it is BBig in the USA and Great Britain. Two very talented and motivated teams (VBONE and Crypton Studio) with substantial Decentraland building experience are being leveraged to create this very popular house. This house (file ready for upload) will be made available on https://crypton.studio for FREE so that anyone can download and place one. Detailed, easy-to-follow instructions for uploading this scene into Decentraland will be provided on the website as well. Please make us the “head of the house” for this grant.

Description

The greatest parts about Decentraland in our eyes are the limitless 3D creative possibilities that can be generated in this metaverse. We believe that the major draw of attention and users to the platform will be engagement through in-world content. That is why we are excited to undertake this project. We want to share our passion and vision with what Decentraland can be with the world.

We will painstakingly create a replica of this BBig house, down to the finest polygon detail allowable. The idea will be rendered using Blender as our team has extensive experience in this platform. A detailed description of the precise development process can be found under the Roadmap and Milestones section below.

It is important to note that this scene is 3 X 6 plots in size. This will allow in-world placement (My Land) for those that have large estates while also allowing anyone with access to private worlds (My World) to place this mind-blowing scene.

Roadmap and milestones

Timeline:

Our devs at Crypton Studio will be contracted (internally) to create and modify this build using these funds. Based upon our previous Decentraland Asset and Wearable experience, we anticipate that this build will take approximately 120 hours making this about $41/hour given the $5000 budget. The typical contract job that we take for 3D design concept work is $50-200/hour making this venture one that is based upon our desire to establish a strong footprint in Decentraland rather than for immediate profit. Depending upon the logistical availability of our devs we expect this job to take 4-8 weeks.

Roadmap and Milestones:

Month 1:

-Design each “room” using screenshots from the TV show placed in the context of the floorplan blueprint using Blender.

-Create scene features with Blender.

-Utilize the Decentraland editor (SDK7) in conjunction with Blender-generated items to create the BB house scene.

Month 2:

-Testing scene functionality in-world and making modifications as needed to improve visual and functional features.

Month 3:

-If needed, additional scene testing before final deployment and upload to https://crypton.studio

I’m interested to know why a company claiming to be the largest company in the segment of customized blockchain development in Europe, with 6 years on the global market and 150+ employees would need $5k in DAO funds for this project. There is nothing in the proposal to explain how this investment would benefit Decentraland.

While you have failed to name the house here, you advertise on your socials that this will be a replica of the Big Brother Reality TV House. You mention that the greatest parts about Decentraland in your eyes are the limitless 3D creative possibilities that can be generated in this metaverse, can you explain why have you decided to replicate a building you don’t have the IP rights to instead of creating something new and innovative?

What would be included in the build that would actually draw and retain users to the experience? If they are provided for free to place on anyone’s land, have you assessed the legal risks for the users or are you prepared to shoulder a lawsuit should one arise?

Thanks for the detailed inquiry. We’ll answer each of your insightful questions below.

Q1: Why would the largest company [Crypton Studio] in the segment of customized blockchain development in Europe, with 6 years on the global market and 150+ employees would need $5k in DAO funds for this project?

Answer: The reason is that Crypton Studio is a business that must generate revenue to sustain operations. This BBig House build project was envisioned by the VBONE team and we recruited Crypton Studio (a close partner) to help create it. Crypton Studio agreed to assist but since they are not a charity and must pay the devs to create this build, they agreed to do it BUT they agreed to do this below cost. This is a huge win for Decentraland and the community.

Q2: There is nothing in the proposal to explain how this investment would benefit Decentraland.

Answer: If it was not clear, then I take the blame. It was one of my goals to write the grant proposal in such a way to convey that this would be a unique build of a very popular house that tens of millions around the world watch every year. The best part is that ANYONE can download it for FREE once created! This would enhance the DCL experience while also adding value to Land and names (access to private World) since this build offers a free placement.

Q3: Can you explain why have you decided to replicate a building you don’t have the IP rights to instead of creating something new and innovative?

Answer: There will be no branding of this BBig House that affects trademark rights. It will simply be a precise footprint. Similar to the many cars (and other items) that can be seen in builds around Decentraland that are obvious exact replicas of trademarked items, The BBig House will simply be a large building that people can place. How outside social groups label such a build, car or item is beyond the scope of trademark rights.

Q4: (Paraphrased) Why did you decide to create this house?

Answer: Decentraland is in need of users. The greatest attraction for potential users is through the interaction of in-game content. We wish to create a very popular house that anyone can place for FREE. There are very few free content items for placement in Decentraland. There are only 4 free builds by default unless you want to spend countless hours in Discord begging people to send you a build for free. This is a ready-made popular build. The innovation for this project really comes from the collaboration that is creating it and the ability to structure the finances to make it free for everyone.

Q5: What would be included in the build that would actually draw and retain users to the experience?

Answer: The simple answer is nostalgia. People like to engage in recreations of familiar places and experiences that they enjoyed in life. This will offer die hard fans, which there are a lot, a new way to see a favorite place. The retention is also facilitated by being able to place the house build for free where they can feel a closer connection to Decentraland once they place something on their land/world.

Q6: If they are provided for free to place on anyone’s land, have you assessed the legal risks for the users or are you prepared to shoulder a lawsuit should one arise?

Answer: There are zero legal risks to users for placing items in Decentraland unless they violate law (e.g., child porn, etc.). In the US, there are no laws that prevent the placement of non-trademarked or trademarked items. The only risk for the placement of any item would be a “DMCA” take down request. This is true for any item found on the internet. Literally any build on Decentraland right now has dozens to thousands of DMCA requestable items because anyone can send a DMCA for any reason. It is important to note that DMCA requests are simply user-generated emails/messages that are sent to an organization that request an item to be removed from a website. Technically, Facebook/Meta owns trademark for the letter “X” for branding purposes in social media. However, it is unlikely that Decentraland will have to scrub the letter X from builds. The absolute worst case scenario for this build, which is has a near zero chance of occurring like all other builds, is that a lawyer from a trademark-holding entity contacts Decentraland and requests to have the item removed. That’s it. Then the DCL team determines whether to remove it or not.
