[DAO:64d4c67] Decentralize Grant System with Bounties

Overview

This proposal outlines the transition from the current grant system to a bounty-based system, aiming to enhance efficiency and community engagement in achieving project milestones. This would make the goals community driven. Then as a community everyone can work on achieving the goals one milestone at a time. The best part, everyone gets paid upon completion of a milestone and everyone has the same opportunity to complete it.

Stage 1: Proposal Submission and Bounty Creation

  • Purpose: Initiate projects with clearly defined objectives and structured paths to completion.
  • Details:
    • Proposals must include:
      • Goals: The final outcome expected from the project.
      • Milestones: Specific tasks required to achieve the goal, with associated costs and deadlines for each (up to 3 months total).
      • Technical Requirements: Detailed specifications for each milestone to ensure clarity and feasibility.

Role of Technical Auditor

  • Function: Works in conjunction with the Grant Support Squad to evaluate the technical sufficiency of milestone submissions.
  • Process:
    • Reviews submissions against the milestone’s technical requirements.
    • Advises the Grant Support Squad on whether submissions meet the set standards.

Bounty Completion and Rewarding

  • Participation: Open to all. Each participant or team can tackle the specified milestones.
  • Reward System:
    • Bounties are paid only upon successful completion and approval of a milestone.
    • If multiple submissions are received by the deadline, the most suitable one, as determined by the Technical Auditor and Grant Support Squad, is chosen.
    • If the deadline is missed, the bounty is awarded to the first team that completes the milestone adequately.

Note: This bounty system replaces the old grant system. It is designed to ensure that contributions are not only timely but also meet the expected quality standards, fostering a competitive yet collaborative environment.

Enacted

If this proposal is passed, it would update to a bounty based system where all can participate. It would also create a new position for the DAO called Technical Auditor which would work with the Grant Support Squad. All the details above will be enacted.

@web3nit Can you share what options I should have included or what makes it invalid?

I like the idea of bounties, many open source project uses them to encourage people to contribute.
But to put bounties, the DAO should first have a roadmap so we can align all ideas.

Foundation is doing this in similar fashion with Game Expo and other big events. Seems to be yielding much better than the grants system. Bounties work well and I believe we should try this route but the DAO doesn’t have a clear direction or roadmap for the future, especially as it relates to the next 7 years of working alongside foundation. Projects need to be in line with specific production goals and development roadmaps, of which we have none. What is the role of the DAO in developing the platform and how are we preparing to take over the duties that foundation is currently performing?

The idea was the DAO members would propose overall goal and then list milestones to get there. Then every milestone is a bounty. Sorta like an open source project. People only get paid upon completion.

I am not directly opposed to a bounties system, but I believe it is yet another attempt to boost creativity in Decentraland that will not succeed.

The fact that Decentraland is literally a desert is due to deeper factors that cannot be resolved with changes like this.

If teams work concurrently and only the best suitable solution is chosen, it seems to me as though it results in a waste of productivity.

Nothing prevent from people saying “I’m working on this” to avoid several people working on the same part.
This is being done with Git for over 20 years now, it’s definitely doable.
