Linked Pre-Proposal

Should the user be able to change the case of their NAME?

Summary

A proposal to allow users to modify the case (uppercase/lowercase) of their registered names in Decentraland.

Abstract

This proposal outlines the importance and benefits of allowing users to alter the case of their registered names after the initial registration. It emphasizes the impact on personal and brand identity, accommodating the need for proper capitalization in names and brand titles.

Motivation

The inability to modify the case of a registered name can lead to inconsistencies with personal or brand identity. This limitation can be particularly significant for brands where specific capitalization is integral to their image. Implementing this change will enhance user experience and brand representation in Decentraland.

Specification

The proposed change involves updating the Decentraland name registration system to allow users to adjust the case of their names. This would include both technical updates and a user-friendly interface for making these adjustments.

Conclusion

Implementing the ability to change the case of registered names will significantly benefit users and brands in aligning their virtual identity with their real-world representation. This small change could have a considerable impact on user satisfaction and brand perception within Decentraland.

Im voting no, unless there are limitations and benefits to the platform in the name changes. Wallets can already use and switch between multiple names and identities. Names can be bought/sold or transferred. Typically the ability to change names or the creation of a system to do so, requires costs to the platform which should be passed onto the players wanting to make the name change.

In many video games where people have online identities, there is a charge of some kind for a name change. For DCL this could be in some form of $MANA fee, in addition to a gas fees. (which would almost make it more worthwhile to just create a new name at the moment unless/until $MANA gets into the $1+ range.)

IF it is allowed, there should be a cooldown where the name cannot be changed again for at least 1 month, or maybe even 6 months at a minimum.

Some game worlds also have a place where players can lookup ALL name changes to see the previous name of a player, in the case of heavily trolling, animosity, or abuse. (like on a forum)

Is it a misunderstanding on your part, or did I misinterpret it? This proposal allows for changes in letter casing in the name rather than changing the name itself. Can you please confirm if I’ve misunderstood?

Just to better understand and as an example I minted “Jinxy” which is how I spelled it at the time. Does this proposal allow me to modify it to “JINXY” if I want to?

Hello @Mease

I’m not talking about making changes to the blockchain records, just a solution that allows users to display their names in whatever case they prefer.

There is no cost in gas fee or MANA in this proposal.

Hello @LandlordDao

This proposal only allows you to change from uppercase to lowercase and vice versa.

It is not allowed to change the name itself or some letters for others, it only affects the capitalization.

Hello @DedHeadJ

Yes!

Just as it would allow you to change from “Jinxy” to “JINXY” it would also allow me to change from “punkpink” to “PunkPink”

Don’t apologize, I’m trying to make the proposals clearer, I hope that for the next ones I can explain myself better from the beginning
