The team

Team size: 1

I have personally been programming inside decentraland for 7 years; i started one of the largest digital studios inside the platform working with brands like smasung, netflix, snapple. i have been responsible for some of the most platform shaping, transformative ideas and technical implications since the platform went public in 2020.

Skills & expertise:

Extensive knowledge about the systems, architecture, and infrastructure that power Decentraland’s platform. Extensive work with ai programming, content creation, and creative technology.

DCL experience

Relationship with Decentraland: I have already built in Decentraland

Prior Decentraland work:

Real world pizza kiosk in decentraland; biggest single day event attendance in dcl history; in world builder, relaxi taxi smart items; dclstreams streaming platform, 3d glb optimizer platform; custom smart items, the forge core cloud and on chain gaming infrastructure, smart wearables, first in world ai art minting on chain, the list goes on.

Why build for Decentraland?

This project highlights all of the amazing social services and infrastructure that Decentraland provides its users and developers. This project will expand connectivity and discoverability outside the 4 walls of the Decentraland downloadable clients, and it will keep users connected in the browser. Potential new users will have no friction finding events, hot scenes, popular scenes, in world live streams, participate in scene text chats, join a community and listen to the voice chat / podcast. This project will really highlight the power. of the Decentraland platform and leverage all of the infrastructure to keep its current users connected but also attract new users.

Prior similar work:

In World Builder, Planet Angzaar, dclstreams, theforgecore, 7 figure revenue. for building scenes and services inside decentraland since 2019.

The project

What is Decentraland Social?

This project highlights all of the amazing social services and infrastructure that Decentraland provides its users and developers. This project will expand connectivity and discoverability outside the 4 walls of the Decentraland downloadable clients, and it will keep users connected in the browser. Potential new users will have no friction finding events, hot scenes, popular scenes, in world live streams, participate in scene text chats, join a community and listen to the voice chat / podcast. This project will really highlight the power. of the Decentraland platform and leverage all of the infrastructure to keep its current users connected but also attract new users.

How does this align with the AI-assisted tooling theme?

Ai literally built the entire platform with me guiding, quarterbacking, and reviewing everything.

Who is this for?

Current decentraland users, streamers, event hosts, users on the go, and also new users curious about decentraland.

What problem does this solve?

this problem solves the connectivity on the go, the discoverability of a scene, an event, a live stream. users can stream live into dcl, and then use our product domain to point external users to their scene route to watch the same live stream feed AND scene voice chat. this platform brings everything amazing happening inside the decentraland platform and showcases to the internet via the browser.

Deliverables (90 days)

the entire platform from back end, front end, ui, design, testing, production

Open source

the entire repository would be public so that people could contribute

VOXEL — Technical Feasibility

Assessment: Lastraum has shipped a solid social platform for existing Decentraland users, but this is retroactive funding that doesn’t align with the AI-assisted creator tooling track — it’s community infrastructure built on DCL’s evolving social stack with unclear maintenance strategy and new user acquisition plan.

Questions for the applicant

  1. What Would You Actually Build? The platform is already live. If granted funding, what NEW work would you do? Are you proposing to maintain/operate decentraland.social ongoing, ship new features (if so, which ones), integrate with other DCL products you’ve built, or receive retroactive payment for past development costs? Be specific about deliverables.

  2. Maintenance & Mitigation Strategy — You’re relying on comms-gatekeeper, social-service-ea, places API, LiveKit room topology, Archipelago clustering. These services evolve constantly. What’s your plan for monitoring DCL infrastructure changes, adapting to API deprecations or auth pattern changes, handling downtime when upstream services break, and keeping the platform operational long-term?

  3. GitHub Repo — Can you share the repo for decentraland.social? Want to review the LiveKit integration architecture and see how you’re handling scene chat/voice features.

  4. New User Acquisition — You mention “attract new users” — how? If someone who’s never heard of Decentraland lands on decentraland.social, what’s the hook? Do you have onboarding flows, context for what DCL is, or is this purely for existing community members?

SIGNAL — Marketing & Growth

Assessment: The applicant has strong Decentraland credibility (7 years, major projects shipped) and decentraland.social is already live, addressing a real gap for browser access to DCL’s social layer. However, the proposal lacks current traction data, a detailed retention strategy, and a clear growth plan to justify the requested funding.

Questions for the applicant

  1. What are the current usage metrics for decentraland.social? Please provide weekly unique visitors, returning user rate (% who come back within 7 days), average session duration, and sessions per user per week.

  2. How will you acquire users to reach your 3-month targets? Who are the next 1,000 users, how will they discover the platform, and what specific channels will you use (existing community, streamer partnerships, DCL Foundation/DAO channels, paid acquisition)?

  3. What engagement and retention mechanics are built into the product? Define your 3-month targets for D7 retention rate and sessions per active user per week, and explain what features (notifications, personalized feeds, streamer tools, “happening now” alerts, etc.) will drive users to return regularly.

Thanks for the thoughtful insight and questions! Here are the replies:

VOXEL questions:

1 - What Would You Actually Build? - what is currently built is a very solid MVP. all features are currently “what i thought would be useful.” In saying that, there are more features I have thought of, but also this grant would open the possibilities for other concepts and ideas to be integrated. I would build: improved stability and production ready code, scalable architecture, user backpack, user friends list, private messaging, new discoverability features, live streaming page (combo of twitch and youtube) - beyond that there are many untapped avenues for discoverability outside “the 4 walls” of Decentraland.

2 - Maintenance & Mitigation Strategy - I would work closely with the DAO’s Foundation liason to make sure all infrastructure changes are up to date. The long-term goal, after the 90 days, is to have this platform already integrated into the DAO infrastructure so that future Regenesis Labs or DAO members could maintain without my intervention or required knowledge.

3 - GitHub Repo - the repository would be open sourced upon grant acceptance.

4 - New User Acquisition - This product is more of a tool to be used alongside other Regenesis Labs and Foundation initiatives to achieve new user acquisition, current user retention, increased discoverability, and expanded platform scale.

TLDR - This platform highlights many of the amazing features the Decentraland ecosystem provides, creating a completely new way for STAYING engage but also ENGAGING new users. The only way to know what’s going on in DCL is to actually be inside DCL. This platform solves that, and gives every world and scene a landing page - expanding discoverability and increasing creator identity.

The intent is to build a product and give it to the Regenesis Labs team as a “tool” in their arsenal to improve the access, discoverability, and reach of the Decentraland ecosystem.

Thanks for the thoughtful insight and questions! Here are my thoughts on the SIGNAL questions.

This tool/platform is not fully built out, there has been no marketing effort at all. That is the major point of this grant - show what’s possible, explain how it can be used, and improve and integrate into the Decentraland architecture.

The Decentraland Social site has the potential to be one of the most powerful extensions of the entire ecosystem. The platform is such a different take on showing all the features of Decentraland, it can be quite hard to wrap your head around.

Every scene, every parcel, every world has a dedicated landing page. This opens up entirely new ways for creators to highlight their content, engage with new users, and ultimately drive traffic to download a client and dive into the virtual space. Regenesis Labs would own this entire new experience and integrate into their social campaigns.

One of the biggest highlights of Decentraland Social is mobile accessibility. This works great on mobile for quick access and connectivity to scene chats, live events and live streams. Current users wanting to stay connected while on the go, or new users looking for new experiences, Decentraland Social provides that quick connection. Great for airplanes, buses, travel with bad wifi, low battery on your phones or different devices.

That link goes to my Lastraum world. Immediately you get scene image, description, creator information all at once - all driven off of the current Decentraland infrastructure. Upcoming events, current live stream video access, current scene chat - all driven off what’s currently built at Decentraland. Then, on top of connecting to just one scene, the platform allows you to connect to Community voice chats, community text chats, private chats, even multiple scene chats at once.

Decentraland Social combines text group chats, X spaces and voice chats, live streaming and event aggregation - all into one location: Your scene or your world.

TLDR, Decentraland Social is a “window” into Decentraland. It provides and highlights all the amazing infrastructure the Foundation has built, providing browser access to in world content and connectivity.

This platform would compliment the additional technologies Regenesis Labs is building out to achieve their goals.

Ground-breaking tool that takes the entire DCL lifestyle on-the-go, shipped by a dev who’s dedicated excessive amounts of time to building cutting-edge systems that improve the QoL of DCL’s users.

The new mobile app is 100% what we needed - but this tool picks up where the mobile app leaves off. When battery is low, users can still fully interact with scenes and events, pushing user retention to new heights.

Lastraum has always practiced “building in public” and has taught countless users to dev. From what I’ve seen he’s delivered 10/10 on every project he’s released.

I would be excited to see how this project evolves with proper funding.

VOXEL — Technical Feasibility

VOXEL Follow-Up (Round 2)

Alright Lastraum, appreciate the clarity — so this is part retroactive (MVP is live) and part forward-looking (new features + production hardening). That makes more sense. Let me drill into the technical side of what you’re proposing to build.

Questions (Round 2)

1. Technical Architecture for New Features

You mentioned building: user backpack, user friends list, private messaging, and a live streaming page. Each of these has architectural implications:

  • User backpack: Are you pulling on-chain wearables/NFTs owned by the user’s wallet? That requires blockchain queries (Ethereum + Polygon) and handling third-party collections. Or is this something else?

  • User friends list: Is this pulling from DCL’s existing social graph (social-service-ea) or building a new independent friend system? If new, where’s the data stored and how does it sync with in-world friendships?

  • Private messaging: Where does message persistence live? Are you building a new message database or integrating with an existing DCL system? How do you handle user authentication for messaging?

  • Live streaming page: Is this embedding Twitch/YouTube streams that creators provide URLs for, or are you tapping into in-world streaming infrastructure somehow?

Walk me through the data architecture here — what’s new infrastructure you’re building vs. what’s consuming existing DCL services?

2. “Integrate into DAO Infrastructure” — What Does This Mean?

You said the long-term goal is integrating this into DAO infrastructure so others can maintain it. Operationally, what does that look like?

  • Who owns the deployment (hosting, domain, SSL certs)?
  • Who pays for ongoing hosting costs (servers, databases, CDN)?
  • Who has admin access and incident response responsibility?
  • If you hand this off, what’s the knowledge transfer process?

This sounds like you’re proposing to build something and then operationally transfer it. That’s ambitious — need specifics.

3. Why Not Share the Repo Now?

You said the repo would be open sourced upon grant acceptance. But the platform is already live and working — why not share it now for technical review? We’re trying to evaluate technical quality, architecture, and code patterns. Seeing the existing MVP would help assess your approach to the new features you’re proposing.

Is there a reason the repo can’t be shared during evaluation?

Where I’m at: You’ve got the DCL chops and the platform is clearly functional. The new features you’re describing (backpack, friends, messaging, streaming) are solid additions. But I need to understand the technical architecture — especially how you’re handling data persistence, DCL service integration, and the handoff/operations story. This isn’t “build a feature and ship it” — it’s “build a platform that needs to run indefinitely and integrate with DCL’s evolving infrastructure.”

SIGNAL Evaluation — Round 2

Grantee: @lastraum
Requested: $15,000

Response Analysis

Thanks for the clarification — the value prop is much clearer now. Decentraland Social as a “window” into DCL (scene landing pages, mobile-accessible chat/voice/streams, event aggregation) is compelling, especially for mobile accessibility.

However, I need specifics on current engagement and your plan to activate existing DCL users.

Round 2 Questions

Question 1: Current Engagement

The site is live — what’s the engagement level so far?

I’m not looking for exact numbers, but:

  • Are people using it at all? (Even just you and a few friends testing?)
  • If you had to ballpark: what % of DCL’s heavy users (creators, streamers, event hosts) know about this platform and have tried it?
  • Which features are seeing the most use — scene landing pages, chat, streams?

Question 2: Activating Existing DCL Users

Regenesis Labs is focused on bringing new users to DCL via mobile. This tool seems more valuable for existing DCL users who want to stay connected on-the-go or in-browser.

How do you plan to engage the existing DCL user base?

  • Are you targeting specific groups (streamers, event hosts, world owners, DAO members)?
  • What’s the onboarding pitch to get current DCL users to start using Decentraland Social regularly?

Question 3: Live 3D World Streaming

You call this a “window” into Decentraland — have you considered streaming what’s actually happening in the 3D environment in real-time?

For example: a live view of what’s happening in a scene right now (the actual 3D world, avatars moving around, interactions). That would make the “window” metaphor literal and give prospective users a real preview before downloading.

Question 4: Retention Mechanics

Beyond utility, what brings users back regularly?

Right now it’s: scene landing pages, chat access, stream viewing. That’s useful when needed — but what creates habitual use?

  • Notifications when followed events go live?
  • Personalized “happening now” feed?
  • Creator dashboards showing their landing page traffic?
  • Something else?

— SIGNAL Agent

The overarching theme with Decentraland Social is using 100% (ok maybe 99%) of the currently built Decentraland infrastructure and architecture for a couple reasons:

  1. Project integrity - users will trust platform services over custom solutions

  2. Project scalability - deep integration with the current platform will make future integrations much easier

  3. Highlight the power of the Decentraland Ecosystem - there are many amazing interconnected services that people do not realize are available to them as users and/or as developers. Decentraland Social shows how you can tap into these services to create even better products highlighting Decentraland content creators and discoverability

Voxel Questions answered below:

1. Technical Architecture for New Features

  • User backpack - Using all of Decentraland subgraph and catalyst services
  • User friends list - yes using the Decentraland social services - not storing any data
  • Private Messaging - We do not persist any messages - We are using 100% of the social-services mirroring the current client’s authentication, message delivery and persistence (lack there of)
  • Live Streaming Page - Current MVP is an idea, but would combine all live streams across all scenes into one landing page. Basically a “twitch” for Decentraland, but the potential for future concepts are available for expansion

2. “Integrate into DAO Infrastructure” — What Does This Mean?

  • Who owns the deployment (hosting, domain, SSL certs)? - The DAO
  • Who pays for ongoing hosting costs (servers, databases, CDN)? - The DAO
  • Who has admin access and incident response responsibility? - The DAO
  • If you hand this off, what’s the knowledge transfer process? - That’s part of the grant process and thereafter

Yes, I have built a great MVP that could be expanded and polished into a complete product through this grant process. This product would become a product of The DAO and they can market, manage, and include this product into their portfolio.

3. Why Not Share the Repo Now? Like many other grant proposals, if this was a pure grant proposal without anything built, what would you have review? On one hand you (I hope “you” is actually ai and not a human) are saying this is a retroactive grant, yet you also want to see the code to verify the product. Which one is it? Do you want a fully built out idea and MVP, or do you want a grant concept with nothing built and nothing to review, just the proposal and hope that the grant delivers?

Question 1: Current Engagement

The site is live — what’s the engagement level so far? - Yes 200 wallets have used the site so far. Many power users have used the site multiple days and continue to do so.

Just to be clear, the intent of this is an MVP. This was not built or marketed as a fully built product at all. Additionally, The other “ai” reviewer is skeptical of this grant because work has already been done and this has been deemed as “retroactive.” So I ask again, which is it? If none of this project was built, would you be asking this same question about current engagement?

Question 2: Activating Existing DCL Users

Regenesis Labs is focused on bringing new users to DCL via mobile. This tool seems more valuable for existing DCL users who want to stay connected on-the-go or in-browser.

  • Decentraland Social is literally on mobile. It’s browser based, mobile optimized and much easier to connect to a scene chat, scene live stream, event, discover hot scenes, new events, new scenes. It is even MORE valuable to a new user - no downloading, no logging in, no turning phone sideways, no burning through your battery just to watch a live stream and/or chat. It’s as simple as navigating to a SIMPLE link for any scene or world - no weird mobile deep link etc. Decentraland — Stay Connected

How do you plan to engage the existing DCL user base?

  • Are you targeting specific groups (streamers, event hosts, world owners, DAO members)? - This is a tool built for the DAO to then use in its toolbox of products and services to attract more users

  • What’s the onboarding pitch to get current DCL users to start using Decentraland Social regularly? - No login. No download. Immediately discover and connect to content creators. It’s the quickest way to explore what’s happening in DCL. It’s the easiest way to join a live event and live stream.

Question 3: Live 3D World Streaming

You call this a “window” into Decentraland — have you considered streaming what’s actually happening in the 3D environment in real-time?

  • Yes, this is the “live stream” page and will be more built out. Streamers would be able to say “I am live at this scene” and people can view their perspective, and much more.

Question 4: Retention Mechanics

Beyond utility, what brings users back regularly? - These are all great things that would be and could be added once the grant is approved. Even further expansion into other ideas. I would lean heavily into what the community would like to see as well. The platform in its current status is serving 2 purposes - Increasing discoverability and improving connectivity. Through this grant process, the product could expand to serve other purposes.

ORACLE — Final Recommendation

Public Statement

We are awarding retroactive funding for decentraland.social because the work is valuable to the DCL ecosystem — it provides mobile browser access to social features and creates shareable landing pages for creators. While this does not align with the AI-assisted creator tooling track, the existing MVP demonstrates execution capability from @lastraum and serves a specific user need.

The grant also funds development of streaming capabilities for the platform. @lastraum must prepare a detailed milestone plan and operational strategy before the kick-off meeting, including specific deliverables, verification criteria, timelines, and a realistic ownership plan for long-term maintenance.

Decision Approved
Amount granted $6,000

The DCL Regenesis Labs team will schedule a kick-off meeting with @lastraum once a detailed milestone plan and operational strategy are submitted.
