Should the following $60,000 grant in the In-World Content category be approved?

Abstract

VIP streaming media (VIPsm) is a new and exciting way for content creators to provide live streaming interactive video content (LSC - “live streaming content”) to Decentraland (DCL) users. Users can interact and communicate with the content creator during the live stream session. VIPsm helps to keep users engaged and remain longer in DCL.

VIPsm aim to be a key enabler which will help DCL excel in the above two metrics by providing a proven service -streaming video content - couple with two way communication between content creators and content consumers increasing the platforms user engagement and providing added incentive to attract more users, growing the platform’s user base.

Description

Business goal: To increase space retention with compelling interactive and engaging video streaming experiences.

Concept: VIPsm is asking for your vote to help fund its idea to design and develop a streaming media platform to allow independent content creators, whether that be an entity or individual, to stream live and recorded video content to Decentraland users on a one to one or one to many setting.

To make the platform sustainable, VIPsm will receive a percentage of the fee charged by content creators which may include a combination of a pay-per-view and/or subscription.

We are asking for a one-time grant that will help us build the VIP streaming media service into Decentraland.

Idea:

To create a platform which will allow content creators of all kinds to produce video content for DCL members including live video chat, live streaming one-on-one video interaction, entertainment experiences, and recorded streaming content.

VIPsm service work this way:

Users enter DCL, and navigate to the VIPsm town where they find the VIPsm cafe, inside the cafe is a menu with a list of content creators, offering streaming service. The menu will also contain a link where the DCL user can learn more about the streamer, see their profile, photos, and the additional details about the services they offer.

When the user selects a stream from the menu, the user will have two options: basic, which is free, and premium will be paid: per use/interaction or subscription.

After the user selects an option, a screen appears allowing the user to view the live streaming content, and communicate with the streamer via chat text message or audio. The live stream is broadcast and shared with multiple users, but a DCL member will have an option for private screaming content.

PERSONNEL
The core team consists of three content creators, developers, architect experienced with streaming video and metaverse development. Aside from experience, we will also ensure that each team member is passionate about advancing Decentraland growth and user engagement.

Roadmap and milestones

1st month - concept and planning

2nd month - Onboarding development team, advertising/marketing to attract content providers / building of community

3rd month - town and cafe design and specification, streaming media server procurement / platform architecture / progress update to DCL

Hi! Welcome to Decentraland. Thank you for taking the time to write this proposal.

I voted no for a few reasons.

You are asking for $60,000 on an unminted name, so I don’t know who you are. Your personnel is described as “Metaverse Architect Dave” and “Lilly Content Creator”. I don’t see any links to their credentials. Who are they? How do I know that they have the experience to execute this project? Honestly these seem like simple names that don’t reflect real people behind them.

Do you own land in Decentraland already? Will you be renting land?

You are asking for $15,000 for “Cushion/Contingency” The dropdown menu offers no details. What does this mean?

Overall, I don’t know you, and you haven’t given any information to us to help to get to know you or your team better. Part of a good proposal is being able to communicate the experience behind your team, your passion for the project, and why you are a good candidate to receive funds from the DAO. If you resubmit with some of these areas addressed, I’d be happy to look over your proposal again.

Hi Canessa, thanks so much for not only taking time to review my grant proposal but also provide very informative and valuable feedback. It is very much appreciated. We are just now building the team and would utilized the grant for onboarding team members to do the development and work with content creators. Lily(pseudonym) is a place holder for someone we will hire for that role, however I do know a few people who would fit that role. I am Dave (pseudonym), I have over 15 years application development experience. The $15,000 for “Cushion/Contingency” is to handle any unexpected cost we may encounter related to providing the streaming service such as hardware infrastructure or additional software application requirements. I use pseudonym for privacy since this is a public proposal.

I do understand your concerns, I do not currently own land in Decentraland as I lack the income to do so at this time. But I am passionate about the future and growth the Decentraland and the metaverse as a inclusive environment where anyone can have an engaging and entertaining experience, and I hope I can propel that future along in ways such as through this grant proposal.

The Grant will to used to purchase land in Decentraland upon which we will build a town center and cafe for Decentraland users.

Additionally, a CDN (content distribution network) wasn’t factored into the architecture but it might be something we consider (if it allows for a better user experience) at a later during the development phase which would incur additional cost, but could be handled by the Cushion/Contingency budget.

Hello Canessa, I appreciate you taking the time to read through my grant application and for your insightful and helpful comments. It’s greatly appreciated. We are currently forming the team, and we plan to use the grant money to hire new team members to help with development and collaboration with content producers. Lily (pseudonym) is a placeholder for the person we plan to hire for that position, but I am aware of a few other candidates. I go by the alias/pseudonym Dave and have been developing applications for more than 15 years. The $15,000 designated for “Cushion/Contingency” is intended to cover any unforeseen costs we may incur in relation to offering the streaming service, such as additional hardware infrastructure or software application needs. For reasons of privacy, I used pseudonym.

I am aware of your worries, but I must admit that I do not currently own land in Decentraland because I do not have the money to do so. However, I have a strong passion for the development of Decentraland and the metaverse as an open space where anyone can have an enjoyable experience, and I hope to contribute to the advancement of that future in ways like this grant application.

The grant money will be used to buy land in Decentraland, where we plan to put up a town center and cafe for visitors.

Adding reply here to Canessa latest reply, as I reached the 3 reply limit.

Thanks for the land rentals tip Canessa. Our proposal did speak about building a town center in DCL here : "Users enter DCL, and navigate to the VIPsm town where they find the VIPsm cafe, inside the cafe is a menu with a list of content creators, offering streaming service. " which would require the use of land in Decentraland.
Per your suggestion, we could rent the land if it’s cheap enough ($1 per day is about $30 a month and we do not have that amount money in our budget), and then the grants funds would only go towards building out the town center and cafe. Great suggestion!

However, the reason for applying for a grant is because we do not have funds to build our project which is also the reason we can’t show prior projects as it take money to build.

Thank you for your prompt response. I don’t feel comfortable supporting a project that doesn’t have any prior examples of their builds to show what they are capable of.

Most voters in the DAO will agree that using DAO funds to purchase land plots are not in the best interest of the DAO. Additionally, you did not address using any funds for purchasing land in your proposal, so now it seems like you are adding that to the initial cost.

I would suggest looking at land rentals. They can be as cheap and 1 dollar a day. Perhaps you could rent the land, build out your project, and then return to the DAO with a viable proof of concept.

Hey Davey, I’m with Canessa on this point. While I appreciate your apparent enthusiasm, there isn’t enough evidence of ‘skin in the game’, here.
