Reflections on the Council’s Situation

This post will clarify why I did not apply for the current Council vacancy and why I am abstaining from voting for any candidate on this occasion.

I left Lisbon with the sweet feeling that Decentraland would open new paths, reborn with a traditional corporate structure. After some time and during this proposal (https://decentraland.org/governance/proposal/?id=a3cad5c2-d72f-468d-bbf2-e96f0f8cea7f), I believed that coexistence between the DAO Committee and the Council might make sense, but after reflecting further I realized that this configuration was an obstacle to the Council’s freedom, rendering its role merely ornamental, just as @maraoz brilliantly described in their resignation (https://forum.decentraland.org/t/my-resignation-from-the-decentraland-dao-council/24405), and I concur.

I understand that once the new structure is established, decisions of this nature fully belong to the Council, not the community, but I struggle to imagine why Council members would agree to let other persons hold signing power instead of themselves.

I feel as though power is being captured by certain individuals who refuse to cede it to those elected as community representatives through a free and democratic process.

Well written and spot on. This project desperately needs proper governance. As important as decentralisation and community governance are, they are useless without some sort of central and binding decision-making process. Or else the future of DCL is left to the interests of the few, not the many.

Hi @PunkPink! This tuesday we’re gathering in-world for a community discussion about the DAO Council and the election. Your perspective would be amazing to have!
