Introduction
Points of Interest (or POIs) are a great way for users to explore and learn about cool places inside Decentraland. Right now the Decentraland project is maintaining two lists of POIs:
- Decentraland Foundation-maintained list, the first implementation of POIs (Legacy POI List).
- DAO-maintained list, updated by the DAO Committee after a governance proposal for adding or removing a POI is approved.
Problem
This creates an unnecessary complexity by having to maintain two lists and prevents the DAO community from removing POIs that are defined on the legacy list by using the POI Removal proposal type.
On a more philosophical level, having a POI list embedded on the World Explorer (aka. Reference Client) goes against the principle of decentralization and community ownership of the project since another client wouldn’t be able to use that list.
Potential Solutions
There are a couple of solutions we could implement if we want to unify both lists:

We could simply migrate all POIs from the Legacy POI List to the DAO maintained one. However the legacy list has 90 POIs, and adding all those by an on-chain transaction will have an estimated gas fee of 200 USD each, totaling a ~$18.000 USD expense to keep those POIs

We could also delete the Legacy POI List and let the community re-add the POIs that are still relevant (Genesis Plaza for example!) to the DAO-maintained list. To minimize the risk of losing an important POI, before the deletion of the Legacy list we could have a discussion on Discord and the Forum about the relevant POIs that we absolutely need to migrate so we can start creating proposals right after the Legacy list has been deleted.

This pre-proposal Poll aims to gather community feedback on the next steps. If any of the YES options get selected, this will become a DRAFT proposal for the community to vote on.
