Personnel
About seven thousand remain standing (according to some sources eight thousand) [2], scattered throughout the island, on average one every 3 km², strongly distinguishing the Sardinian landscape. It is assumed that in the past their number was much greater. In fact there are numerous attested examples, and even more those hypothesized on the basis of the finds found in various centers, of civil buildings (for example, nuraghe Gianbasile in Sindia), noble (Palazzo Zapata in Barumini) and even more frequently religious (nuraghe Lo 'under the church of Sant’Eligio in Bosa, Santa Maria Maddalena in Guamaggiore, San Nicola in Orroli, Santa Vittoria in Nuraxinieddu (Oristano), San Simone in Escolca, etc., just to name a few), built not only by stripping the structure but very often directly on the foundations of pre-existing nuraghi. As for their function, scholars have not yet expressed a common opinion, while most of them think that they were built in the second millennium BC, starting from 1800 BC. up to 1100 BC [3]
Roadmap and milestones
Some are more complex and articulated, real nuragic castles with the highest tower which in some cases reached a height between twenty-five and thirty meters. In most cases, however, these are towers narrowed upwards, once 10 to 20 meters high, with a base diameter of 8 to 10 meters.
In some areas they are located a few hundred meters from each other, as in the Valle dei Nuraghi of the historical region of Logudoro-Meilogu, or in the regions of Trexenta and Marmilla.
