[DAO:f7c50dc] Clarification of Facilitation Squads and Moderator Authority given by the COE

by 0x153b2252eddcb3690ae6f5e9f38be13779e1364d (REDACTED)

The facilitation squad has decided that when they ban someone from Discord if they know that person’s Forum account, they will ban it as well.

When asked what gave them the authority to do this, Fehz responded with an image of the final paragraph of the Code of Ethics Preamble:

“This Code of Ethics will have a wide-ranging scope of application, encompassing not only the official Decentraland DAO Discord server but also all other instances that are linked to the Decentraland DAO such as the Forums, in-world in Decentraland, and the Governance
Platform.”

When asked for clarification, he replied, “wide-ranging scope of application and you have the list.”

Given that logic, it seems Fehz also believes the COE gives him the right to ban individuals from everything mentioned in that paragraph.

However, if you read the entire document, which almost no one who voted in support of it has done, you will find a document that almost exclusively discusses Discord Server rules and at no point expressly states anything about perceived offenses in the Discord being grounds for bans across platforms.

Question:
Does the Code of Ethics give the Facilitation squads and moderators the authority to ban individuals from the Forums, in-world in Decentraland, and the Governance Platform based on their actions within the DAO Discord?

Here is a direct link to the Code of Ethics:

Here is a link to the Facilitation Squad Corner where you can find a link to the COE just above the calendar.

  • Yes - and I’m cool with it
  • Yes - but I don’t support that centralized authority
  • No - and that’s a good thing
  • No - I wish it did

Idc if the discord gonna be centralized, its a place that needs more involvement and rules and its not web3, but forums I agree that this not what we want for DCL… DCL Governance should remain web3 and web3 should remain uncensored.

There is nothing in the COE that makes it clear that you would be banned from anything other than the server so IMO NO, the action of banning in forum is not valid.

“Accumulating three strikes in your record will trigger a one year ban from the server”.

Banning anyone from the platform itself based on how they conduct themselves in arguments inside the DAO seems like a grave overstep of authority in a ‘decentralized’ metaverse - The discord being centralized is one thing, but the forum/game itself is clearly an overstep of what is suppose to be a democratic forum.

I voted for the CoE as an attempt to bring some civility and consistency around Discord mutes/bans - not to give massive amounts of power to a small group that can ban because they arbitrarily tallied some points - of which I’m sure I myself would have accrued many over the years as discussions and ideas get heated, if my arguments weren’t appreciated by those in power.

Overall its pretty disappointing to see us give anyone the power to ban someone from the game itself when it is suppose to be a decentralized engine - users have blocked/mute lists - they should use it - free speech should be even more free in a decentralized metaverse than IRL, we are going backwards on our own principles.

Decentralization isn’t some magical place where we all get along and sing ‘WAGMI’ songs, its a cut-throat world full of scammers & thief’s - its about having the tools for each user to decide for themselves where that line is, users should be free to mute/ban, and if that isn’t enough, we simply need better tooling to allow people to silo themselves away from others.

I am slightly confused, is @jar0d banned from Forum as well as from entering Decentraland Genesis City?

NO ONE IS GOING TO GET BANNED FROM GENESIS CITY

With that said, the argument for considering the DAO as a whole and enforcing consequences for rule-breaking across multiple platforms makes sense for several reasons:

The harmful behavior of a few individuals has negatively impacted not only the atmosphere within the DAO but also the overall project’s progress and the way other communities perceive us. Toxic behavior has already driven away talented and committed community members who no longer wanted to be associated with a negative environment.

As many DAOs, but moreover this specific DAO, consists of a diverse range of platforms, forums, and communities where participants come together to contribute to various aspects of the project and the organization. With that said, it clearly becomes essential to take a holistic approach for this.

Enforcing consequences for rule-breaking across multiple platforms ensures that individuals who exhibit harmful behavior are held accountable for their actions. We strongly believe this will help to maintain a consistent standard of behavior and discourage bad actors from simply moving from one platform to another within the DAO to continue their disruptive actions.

The observation that individuals banned from forums or other platforms continue with their bad behavior is a strong argument for taking a comprehensive approach to enforcement. Without such measures, individuals feel they can act with impunity, knowing that bans in one platform do not affect their presence in others.

Regarding the “wide scope” while enforcing rules, and specially within in-world spaces, we know that might be challenging at the moment, but we’ve considered scalability and the potential for advancements in content moderation tools that are actively being developed by the Foundation for gatekeeping specific scenes or for users blocking other users to avoid harassment, suggesting the enforcement of rules across platforms could become a reality in the near future.

We’re talking specifically about DAO related spaces, so a specific example of how this could be “enforced” in the DAO context, will be by imagining our In-World Headquarters and the DAO official events that will be hosted there, and the way to maintain a safe-space (e.g. by impeding someone to visit that scene).

Again, it’s important to clarify that this doesn’t imply any intent to prohibit platform access for anyone. Instead, it means that scene owners/managers and users will have someday the ability to prevent the display of content they find offensive.

Thank you for explaining to everyone what the ban is & how it works @Fehz . I believe it makes perfect sense and this will resonate with all new & existing users who actively participate in the DAO. I read @Morph 's comment and he mentioned “banning from the game itself” that’s why I was confused.

Really looking forward to In-World DAO Headquarters which I believe is going to make DAO more fun & immersive.

Team are doing an amazing job and I am happy to be a part of this community. :grinning:

It was about time something was actually done if it was. The discord server and forum have become a place where its okay to be targeted whether you have received a grant, voted for one or have a difference in vision as the rest. It was never about “free speech”, its the ongoing harassment, attacks/insults whether public or in DMs. There has to be a point where enough is enough.

I agree, it is also not a shield to the consequences of anyone’s actions or a place where you become the punching bag of those who don’t like you or agree with you.

Thank you for the explanation, makes complete sense.

@Jar0d knew the consequences of his actions. He has been warned dozen times, muted etc… If you look at all the Jar0d’s ban proposals you will see they are not all orchestrated by the same individual. In other words it’s not just one user that wanted him banned. I don’t understand why you keep defending Jar0d where 98% of all active users want him banned. He has brought nothing but negativity & harm to the platform. Therefore anybody who supports or defends Jar0d will also bring harm to the platform. Yourself included. You need to let it go and focus on bringing positive vibes & new users to Decentraland. Trying to bring Jar0d back will only destroy your reputation. That is considering if you have any left.

While I don’t think people should be (at least permanently (which 1 year pretty much is in crypto-time)) banned from the forum, the forum is centralized and owned by the Foundation and the Foundation is free to give authority over it to the Facilitation squad if it wishes so.

@JasonX: I don’t think you are the most fit to comment here, you should have been banned from the Forum a long time ago already due to your multiple discriminatory comments.

Who are you to say anything about this:

USER # OF STRIKES/SANCTION TIER
Jasonx 2 Strikes HIGH TIER
MM/DD/YY DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT INFRACTIONS USER / USERS INVOLVED
10/3/2023 profanity/insults, public harassment, personal attacks and threats HIGH TIER OFFENSE Jasonx

While I do not agree that Jarod should be banned from the forum or anything else except the server this has nothing to do with him. The COE does not provide a clear remedy for banning anywhere other than the server as stated in the COE. If allowing for a ban everywhere was the intent, then it should have been added to the document but as it reads now it is such a loose interpretation open to various subjective opinions.

When it comes to you, I could care less about your opinion about me or my actions. You are the biggest hypocrite but good thing your **Sh :fu:male name was finally banned. Imagine a new user who joined a Foundation sponsored event seeing that name above your Avatar long after it was banned and should have been removed. Your reputation of being a bigot proceeds you, but you must already know that right @JasonX. You need to work on being a decent human being and try to gain any positive reputation you may have left.

This does not make sense at all. I have only had two strikes where I received a 7 day mute. On the other hand your best friend @Jar0d had 5 strikes. Why do you think or believe I should have been banned from the Forum long time ago? In fact you banned me from Decentraland DAO Discord without any valid reason, without warning or without receiving the 2nd or the 3rd strike. I am not sure if @Fehz knows this.

You are still defending your best friend @jar0d even tough he received 5 strikes. I certainly believe with your current state of mind, there is nothing positive you can contribute to Decentraland.

JasonX ban from the Discord happened before the implementation of the COE, and that logs are there but hidden by request of some community memebers. If needed, we could create a separate tab with those ones.

Two other things I want to point out:

  • We cannot apply sanctions retroactively.
  • Facilitation Squad started having “admin” and “moderation” roles in the forums after the COE was approved.

Please share all the logs @Fehz so everyone can see them. Since we are decentralised I believe users have the right to access the logs which you claim are hidden by request of some community members.

So let’s get this straight @HPrivakos believes @jar0d shouldn’t have been banned from the Decentraland DAO Discord for one year for his actions after receiving 5 consecutive strikes, where I’m banned from Decentraland DAO Discord for one year for receiving only two strikes and somehow he believes I should’ve been banned from the Forum long time ago for receiving two strikes? Double standards?

@HPrivakos actions/comments do not look good or align with Decentraland’s values from whichever way we look at it. Neither from the DAO nor from the Facilitations perspective. I am not even going to mention how this looks from the communities perspective at all but let’s let the community be the judge of that.

I never said he should not be banned from the Discord, please read carefully.

You are banned PERMANENTLY from the DAO Discord for being a terrible human being, partly for discriminating according to gender and sexual orientation, but not only.

I didn’t know there was a permanent ban up until now, do you make up the rules as you go? :astonished:

“You are banned PERMANENTLY from the DAO Discord for being a terrible human being”

Terrible Human Being

Discriminating according to gender and sexual orientation

If saying it loud & clear that I’m a STRAIGHT ALPHA MALE discriminates you that is your problem.

You are abusing your power & violating all Decentraland codes, ethics, rules & COE

Nothing in this world gives you the right, power, authority or jurisdiction to call someone, especially an active platform user a Terrible Human Being Especially given your role/position at Decentraland. I could understand if this comment came from another user which would now bother me at all however such false statement coming form someone who is part of Decentraland really hurts me. Is this the way we should talk or treat users in Decentraland? How does this look to someone from the outside? Perhaps a new user who is browsing the forum sees this comment made by one of the platform officials. Do you think this is right? Let us all think about that for a minute.

It seems the power/authority Decentraland has given you over the years has got to your head. You constantly blame (bash) the Foundation in Discord DAO. On multiple occasions you’ve mentioned how the Decentraland Worlds are Centralised because they are run on foundation’s catalyst servers in which users have no control, ownership or face block/ban on their deployed content/scenes if there was any issues or problems.

You then went on to advertise your own servers at $4 a month by saying this is the only way users worlds can be decentralised. Conflict of interest. Your actions have confused all new & existing users by bringing fear, uncertainty & doubt. This lead to many valued users to leave the DAO Discord and Decentraland platform as a whole.

I understand you tried to make extra money on the side, but this was not the proper way to do it. You took advantage of your current position (role) within the organisation for your own personal gains & benefits. Another violation of COE and violation of your Job description’s terms of service. I believe you must be held responsible and accountable for your misdemeanour behaviour. Once again none of your actions align with Decentraland’s COE

Can we please shed a light to Permanent ban? @Fehz

In the end your actions resulted in many active & new users to leave the DAO Discord. Turning what was once a vibrant, active & positive DAO Discord into a total GHOST TOWN

@Fehz @ginoct @yemel @esteban Maybe you should all know & practice this. Nobody is indispensable even if he/she is a part of the SAB/DAO/Foundation etc…

@HPrivakos also owes me money which he never paid back. Please see screenshot. I have not mentioned this to anyone and didn’t think it was even worth mentioning up until he called me a “Terrible Human Being” and he tells me " you are wasting everyone time with your shitty proposal" Once again, conflict of interest. Is HP the judge of what is a good proposal & what is a shitty proposal? Telling this directly to a user is discriminative and also against COE

If being a STRAIGHT ALPHA MALE makes me a terrible human being so be it. At least I’m not a THIEF

It is so easy to just laugh at your meaningless words. Have a wonderful day and try to be less discriminatory when dealing with or referring to other people. Until then, you are completely unfit to comment on my “current state of mind” which is happy to be a positive contributor to Decentraland and DAO related issues.

Positive contributor who votes AGAINST good projects, proposals & grants and who votes FOR questionable, scam, unknown, unverified, projects, proposals & grants because you now have a 500K delegated VP and have to listen to what the superiors in your circle tell you to do and you do exactly what they tell you to do. in order to be part of something, to impress them, to belong somewhere, to have friends. This is your current state of mind that I was referring to. This is the biggest difference between YOU & I

I don’t take orders from nobody
