[DAO:d8bda15] Gamified Autonomous Voting for Decentraland DAO

by 0x0c678c84cc5744f2a5b368ce2aeab3905624ff99 (BitcoinETF)

I propose a gamified, Hat based (nft wearable) autonomous voting system for the Decentraland DAO designed to boost participation by turning routine governance into a dynamic, wearable experience. Inspired by futuristic sorting mechanisms (similar to harry potter sorting hats), each Voting Hat not only represents a user’s chosen voting style but also directly links to their Voting Power (VP).

**Key Features:
**
NFT Wearable Voting Hats:
Each user is issued a unique, non-tradable NFT wearable that acts as their voting hat in the DAO. This NFT is integrated directly into Decentraland and reflects the user’s current VP, affecting whether their vote is cast autonomously or semi-autonomously.

Hat Variants and Flexibility:
Users initially choose from one of three distinct hats each with a tailored voting strategy (e.g., fully autonomous, manual, or hybrid). Should users wish to change their voting style, they can forfeit their current hat on the Decentraland DAO website and select a new one. Only one hat is allowed per user at any given time, ensuring a clear and singular voting profile.

**VP Integration:

**The voting mechanism ties directly to the user’s current VP. At the moment of voting, the system calculates and applies the user’s VP, determining the influence of their vote based on the hat’s configured capabilities. This creates a dynamic feedback loop between a user’s engagement and their voting power.

**Incentivizing New Users:
**
For users without any existing VP, I propose assigning a default VP (e.g., 10-1000) upon their selection and activation of a hat. This ensures that new participants can immediately engage in DAO governance while encouraging further involvement to boost their VP over time.

**Community-Driven Evolution:

**This model is designed as an initial framework and can be tweaked further based on community input. Early testing and feedback will help refine the hat capabilities, VP thresholds, and other parameters to optimize participation and ensure fairness.

**Benefits:
**
Enhanced Engagement: Transforms traditional voting into an interactive, collectible experience that resonates with Decentraland’s futuristic aesthetic.

Personalization & Flexibility: Allows users to tailor their voting behavior, changing their NFT hat as their preferences evolve.

Increased Participation: The default VP assignment for new users lowers the barrier to entry, encouraging broader community involvement.

Direct Impact: Tying the voting power to the NFT ensures that users’ contributions to the DAO are transparently and dynamically represented.

**Conclusion:
**
By integrating non-tradable NFT voting hats directly into Decentraland’s DAO, this proposal offers a fresh, gamified approach to governance that both leverages advanced technology and incentivizes active participation. I believe this innovative model has the potential to significantly improve DAO engagement and can be further refined through community feedback.

For instance, while all three hats could, by default, be set to autonomously vote on POI proposals, their voting behavior can differ on other types of proposals such as governance, draft, name bans, catalyst requests & role/position proposals.

The aim of this proposal is to boost DAO participation by providing users with the option of autonomous voting, ensuring their votes are cast even if they’re away at the time of voting.

Could you possibly clarify this section a bit more? The benefits and differences of each strategy are unclear.

What stops someone from making 1,000 accounts to get your new type of VP tied to hats?

And if you could get it implemented without abuse, punishing any new users who acquire mana and spend it in the marketplace before they’ve even heard of the dao could probably be improved if you want to improve engagement.

Option 1 or Hat #1 can be set to automatically approve all POIs. Because this option is fully autonomous the whole voting will be based on the community majority (except POI’s) If most members vote yes, Hat 1 will cast a yes vote without any additional user input.

Option 2 or the Hat #2 may be configured to automatically vote yes on all POI’s (same as Option 1) while requiring manual voting on all other proposals. This is where user input is needed for important and critical proposals and platform requirements. However other options may be added as per community requests.

Option 3 or Hat #3 is fully manual mode, meaning complete user input is required. This mode might work best for users who are active and constantly engaged with the community DAO, Discord, DCL Forum & critical/relevant platform discussions.

Thus, the first two options ensure that all POIs and other basic proposals pass with ease. Additionally, other basic proposals such as name bans, hire & fire decisions, and catalyst steps could also be added.

I carefully considered the potential for users to game the system via bots & other means. Initially, new users did not receive any VP gains unless they already possessed VP through DCL assets or mana.

Existing users cannot exploit the system because their VP is automatically assigned based on their current holdings. Only new users might be able to game the system, and that would only be possible if we decide to grant them VP.

One option is by not granting the new users any VP, the other option is to grant them a low amount VP like 10 or less.

To prevent new users from gaming the system:

  • Setup rate limits per account creation based on IP addresses.
  • Use machine learning or rule based systems to monitor account behavior post-creation. Suspicious activities, such as rapid, similar voting patterns across many accounts, can trigger additional reviews or account freezes.
  • Implement Discord verification
  • Require users to own a name (currently $29)

The above ruling may not be necessary at all if we decide that new users will not receive any VP.

Advantages and Rationale for This Model:

  1. We will no longer need to reward players for participating in governance activities. (based on council member discussions)
  2. There will be no requirement to adjust or decrease the current VP limits for any proposals.
  3. Proposals that typically struggle the most such as POI add/remove will pass automatically and effortlessly, with no user input.
  4. The model introduces a gamification element to otherwise mundane DAO proposals.
  5. It enables users who are away from their devices to vote autonomously, even while traveling.
  6. It removes the necessity for users to connect their wallets to the DAO website, which can be an obstacle for some.
  7. This is only a trial phase; over time, the model can be further tweaked.
  8. It brings new innovation and excitement to the DAO, and may even inspire other DAOs to adopt a similar model, positioning us as pioneers in emerging technology.
  9. There will be no monetary gains from acquiring Hat NFTs, as they will not be tradable.
  10. At any given time the user has the option to swap & change between all 3 hats on the DAO page as they wish.
  11. We could grant all users badges for hats which will be displayed next to their names in DAO.
  12. This initiative may also be tied to our upcoming marketplace credits, meaning users receive free credits simply by selecting 1 of 3 hats which can than be used in marketplace to purchase wearables, emotes etc…
  13. Based on all other proposals and initiatives I’ve seen, this model might be the best solution we’ve come up with but this is just my personal opinion.

If someone has a better strategic idea or plan I’m all ears.

Interesting concept. I’m curious about other automatic voting options this might be useful. I do question how this would be implemented? How easy? Who will write the contract etc. I’ll vote yes for now to see where it goes and what develops.
