Should the following $50,000 grant in the In-World Content category be approved?

Abstract

We are seeking grant sponsorship from Decentraland to support the marketing and execution of Web3 esports gaming events that will be held in Decentraland. Our goal is to build a Web3 Esport hub in Decentraland, that will attract a remarkable amount of gamers especially from the Asia region. This involves attracting external Web3 gaming projects, guilds, influencers, and gamers to the Decentraland ecosystem.

Description

Decentraland’s transformation into a Web3 esports hub is sought by Chain Challenger, with the goal of hosting 12 Web3 gaming tournaments within six months. We have estimated that each event will have at least 2,000 people in attendance, resulting in a total of 24,000 unique attendees across the 12 events scheduled over 6 months.

These tournaments will feature live streams of popular Web3 competitive games, ensuring a diverse range of game genres to cater to different interests and preferences within the gaming community. External Web3 gaming projects, guilds, KOLs, and gamers will be onboarded through the facilitation of regular AMA sessions and the live-streaming of tournaments.

A predict-to-earn model will be introduced, allowing users to predict tournament outcomes with $MANA, with prizes from a jackpot pool being potentially won, sponsored in part by gaming projects.

Further activities, such as raffle events and Q&A sessions, are considered for participation and sentiment enhancement. Successful execution necessitates a dedicated team, infrastructure, sponsorships, and effective promotion within the specified timeframe.

After conducting an in-depth assessment of LeonardC, I’ve learned that they are a metaverse team based in Hong Kong and serve as the China region ambassador for Decentraland (DCL). Considering that Asia boasts the world’s largest gaming market and Hong Kong’s openness to emerging technologies like Web3 and cryptocurrencies, it provides a unique environment for such a team. I believe that the LeonardC team will introduce a series of innovative experiences and changes to Decentraland (DCL), demonstrating their significant innovation capabilities and growth potential within the metaverse space. I have a positive outlook on their future contributions and impact. Therefore, I choose to support them, and I hope that everyone can recognize the potential of the Asian market.

Did you delete the grant you proposed in the past two weeks? I cannot find it to see what has changed from this grant. Or did you possibly just delete that one, and resubmit it again? Thank you.

so do i understand it correctly that you’ll live stream esports tournaments and have a bookie service in-world? so it’s kind of a metaverse horse racing track?

Do you have land already or you’ll host this in a world? how do you plan to get people there, ie from what channels? marketing is the downfall of many projects here that promise a lot but are unable to fulfill the goals they set due to lag or other reasons.

Sounds like a really interesting project, looking forward to your answer!

Hello, thank you for taking the time to submit the same proposal twice. What changed that you chose to delete the first proposal and resubmit?

Sports betting is illegal in many states of the USA. With crypto under attack it’s a good excuse for a country to band decentraland.org website. Even those games with a proven track record and already delivered such as weed farm robbery - consistently on the top 30 performing parcels cannot even get funding. Software should be done for free and as a hobby not paid

Yes, we re-submitted our proposal and deleted the old one

We are resubmitting the grant proposal since we realised the previous month’s budget was used up

We won’t be involved in any sports betting activities. Instead, the predict-to-earn system will function like a voting/lottery system.

For instance, imagine there are two teams, Team A and Team B, competing in a tournament event within Decentraland. Anyone in Decentraland can ‘vote’ for their favorite team by staking $MANA in the smart contract. Those who successfully predict the winning team will have a chance to win prizes provided by the gaming projects for free (like a lottery). If you can’t predict the winning team, your staked $MANA will be automatically returned to your wallet (we’re considering adding a small percentage of participation fee in $MANA, so as we host more tournaments, more $MANA will be burned, benefiting everyone in Decentraland).

In summary, the predict-to-earn model is similar to the IDO model but doesn’t try to mimic a casino/betting model. We hope this clears up any confusion.

The budgets are per quarter and not monthly.

Why do we want to attract external Web3 game projects to Decentraland (DCL)? There are several reasons:

  1. Decentraland naturally has a substantial user base from Brazil and Europe. This is particularly appealing to many Asian game projects because they often find it challenging to reach users in these regions. Many of these Asian projects already come with their own user traffic and are highly competitive. Examples include Matr1x FIRE, SERAPH, XOCIETY, Arena Of Faith, E4C: Final Salvation, and more.

  2. While Decentraland currently has fewer users from China, it’s well-known that China is the largest gaming market globally, with hundreds of millions of gamers. By collaborating with external projects from China and across Asia, we can jointly organize esports events in DCL, effectively attracting a large number of Asian gamers.

The main reason we want to host Web3 Esports tournament events in Decentraland is solely for promoting competitive Web3 games, like FPS games (e.g., Shrapnel, Matr1x FIRE), MOBAs (e.g., Arena Of Faith), and not for any sports betting or casino games.

Our project will never involve any sports betting activities, and the “predict-to-earn” feature will function solely as a voting/IDO model, as I mentioned earlier. This was designed to increase engagement from the audience/participants and offer them chances to win rewards provided by the Web3 games, without involving any betting activities.

Regarding marketing concerns, we are currently the largest Web3 gaming guild in the Chinese regions, with over 80,000 community members. There’s no need to worry about that. Feel free to explore more details on our social media channels.

Oops, it’s a typo. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Hey everyone, I’m sorry for not providing clear definitions of the terms ‘Esports’ and ‘Predict-to-earn,’ which may have caused some confusion and led to the misconception that we’re involved in activities similar to casinos or sports betting.

Recently, we hosted an Asian KOL PvP tournament event for XOCIETY, a Korean Web3 MMOTPS game. I encourage you to check out the livestreaming link and our social media posts. This will give you a better understanding of what we’re currently involved in and why it has the potential to be successful and popular in Decentraland as well.

Hi hi,

I really love the idea of tapping into the ESports market and creating some sort of bridge between the web2 esports world and DCL. I can definitely see people gathering to watch tournaments and interact with the players in DCL, making an immersive, social experience kind of similar to Bufalo hosting dinner and a movie. I’m not sure how I feel yet on the specifics of this grant though- mainly the voting vs betting aspect for legality reasons that I don’t understand, and I haven’t really considered the budget. Just wanted to share my initial thoughts.

Officer I wasn’t sports gambling, I was doing predict to earn I swear. “Try telling that to the boys downtown hahaha, bookem danno”. Sounds like you have some development experience from what you’re saying I would suggest a different more legal game proposal.

I agree that “predict-to-earn” can be misleading. In reality, our proposal is a simple voting system where users stake a small amount of $MANA to participate. External projects provide the rewards, and no one loses money.

I liked the idea, but if this proposal is approved, can the MANA be returned to the DAO treasury instead of being burned? This way, it would be considered as returning the invested money by the DAO to our treasury in the long run.

Absolutely! This idea sounds even better than simply burning the tokens

This is a very interesting proposal to me and my company. As an upcoming game developer, having an esports hub to participate in would be excellent.
