New Wearable Rarity Tier: Exotic (50 mint/supply)

Summary

Canny feature request. Per the Foundations request we are promoting it to the final stage of governance since this affects the smart contract.

Abstract

Having to decide between 100 mint and 10 mint is often a really difficult decision. Not only for Wearable Creators but also for projects onboarding with Wearables. This last 2 years I have made over 200 wearables and the majority of those were with 3rd party entities looking to onboard onto the platform. It’s always been a pain point trying to weigh the benefits of 100 vs 10. While 10 is very expensive because you have less wiggle room to give away for any promotional needs while 100 isn’t quite exclusive enough for some projects and visions.

Motivation

The addition of a new Exotic Rarity Tier (50 Mint) to the publishing options would be important and would help to solve a number of problems that currently exist within the platform.

One key benefit of adding a new Exotic Rarity Tier is that it would provide content creators with more flexibility and control over their creations. Currently, creators must choose between two Rarity Tiers: Common (100,000 Mint), Uncommon (10,000 Mint), Rare (5,000 Mint), Epic (1,000 Mint), Legendary (100 Mint), Mythic (10 Mint), and Unique (1 Mint). These options can be limiting for creators who want to produce a limited number of high-quality items that are not quite as rare as a 10 Mint item, but rarer than a 100 Mint item. By adding a 50 Mint Rarity Tier, creators would have a new option that falls between these two extremes, allowing them to more accurately reflect the value and rarity of their creations.

Another benefit of adding a new Rarity Tier is that it could help to address some of the issues related to scarcity and demand on the Decentraland platform. Currently, the Mythic (10 Mint) tier is highly coveted, and as a result, items at this tier are often sold at a premium price. This can create a situation where only the most financially well-off users are able to afford Rare items, which can lead to feelings of exclusivity and inequality within the community. By adding a 50 Mint Rarity Tier, there would be more options available to users who are looking for unique and valuable items but may not be able to afford the high prices of Rare items. This could help to create a more inclusive and equitable market for wearable items.

Finally, the addition of a new Rarity Tier to the publishing options would be a valuable addition to the platform, providing content creators with more flexibility and control over their creations and helping to address issues related to scarcity and demand. It would also create more opportunities for users to find unique and valuable items that fit their budget and interests. When the user base grows again this will also provide another rare category for mass audiences.

Specification

We are proposing the addition to the option to submit Exotic (50 Mint) to the publishing pipeline. This tier would be put in between Legendary and Mythic tiers. As well as a new tab in the marketplace as shown in the example here: External Image

It is suggested that the rarity background color be Red as it is one of the few colors left that hasn’t already been used. It is suggested that the name be “Exotic” to describe it’s unique nature.

Impacts

Addition of the new Rarity Tier: Exotic would impact the way the current smart contract works as all rarity tiers are determined there. This would require a minor change to that contract to deploy the new tier.

Implementation Pathways

The new rarity tier would be integrated in the following areas:

  • Wearable submission interface. Selection menu of rarity types. Added in between Mythic and Legendary options.
  • Marketplace rarity option filters. Added in between Mythic and Legendary options.
  • Backpack filter and sorting mechanisms. Exotic wearables should be sorted in between Mythic and Legendary wearables.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we believe this addition of Exotic tier will provide new opportunities for creators to create interesting projects and provide an even more creative way to innovate new wearables. We believe this tier will also interest some other micro & macro communities that have yet to jump into Decentraland. If there is anything that Doki and I can do to assist in the integration of this new tier we are willing to help!

Maybe it’s better to implement amount selection, instead of new rarity tiers?
On Nifty, for example, you can select how many pieces you want. Seems more flexible, than tiers

Hey there, Nifty isn’t the only marketplace that does this and not the first to do so. This idea was discussed heavily and most agreed that it would complicate things too much. It would also nullify every existing tier and would likely result in people not using them anymore.

Why not allow it to be any number and give scopes.

1 is unique
any number between 2-10 is mythic
any number between 11-100 is legendary
any number between 101-1000 is epic
any number between 1001-10000 is uncommon
any number between 10001-100000 is common

And when minting you can just type the amount you want.

You forgot Rare, but otherwise I dig that idea

Indeed

just give us the option to have any number as the wishes to mint.

THe primary issue is that it is more technically challenging to implement, and this idea works within the existing design

It is something the foundation would neglect again so I don’t even bother myself to think to much about it.

I don’t think this is necessary but if the community wants it I’m also not against it. Anyone see a reason why this would be a problem?

There are many ways to implement and keep both systems and make them fit for everyone. I don’t believe that tiers is the only right way. And bduge solution seems perfect and the same as i expected in my mind.

Another reason to not overcomplicate it is because the conversations I’ve had with the foundation have indicated that the only way to get this kind of change through the pipeline is to keep it simple in scope of work. This already touches quite a few different departments. We learned from Hands category how complicated things can get very quickly. Let’s not repeat that. It’s already taken a year to get it on their radar, adding a way to set any supply mint + the categorizing by # would be more complex than just adding a new tier and personally I’d rather just have a 50 mint than having it keep being put off to where eventually it just doesn’t happen. This happens a lot with feature requests.

I used to think that having a custom mint amount would be better, but over the last two years being here I’ve come to realize that our distinct tiers and rarities is one of the things that sets our ecosystem apart from others. I like knowing exactly what amount of supply something is just by seeing a color or a rarity name. If we added the custom amount I wouldn’t know right off the bat how much the supply is. This might not be the best for newcomers either to have to remember a range rather than just a set of tiers.

I also do not think that a 2 supply is valued the same as a 7 supply, or 10 supply. Therefore grouping them all in Mythic wouldn’t really translate as a “Mythic.” It would be a pretty harsh transition for the existing creators and consumers (whether they’re present or not during this bear market). This would likely cause significant amount of more UI work to ensure clarity of what’s being displayed on the marketplace. Not to mention this would likely cause a lot of confusion for collections prior to this change for newcomers.
