Introduction

Welcome to the third update for the Technical Liaison and SDK Support Team. Our main goals are supporting scene creators, liaising with the Foundation, and migrating selected scenes from SDK6 to SDK7. As a complementary goal, we鈥檙e developing the SDK6 Adaptation Layer, which runs SDK6 over an SDK7 runtime so scenes can still work on new explorers.

  • We keep collaborating with the Grant Support Squad to review the technical aspects of grants.
  • We are meeting with Nico and the SDK team to align on the changes and coordinate some support tickets.

SDK Support Team

Scene Migration

We created an issue to show the queue of scenes to be migrated. We keep the information up-to-date, and there are also link tests to work-in-progress/already migrated scenes. August progress:

  • AntromRPG: The migration is in the final stage. The scene鈥檚 owner has started iterating over the public repo to add new features. Our team continues to provide support, but the developers are no longer allocated to this project.
  • Vroomway: a GitHub issue with the progress tracking was created, and a meeting with the scene owner was held. Overall, the migration is advanced; only a major milestone is pending.
  • DG Marketplace: the library is in the decentraland-scenes repo, the UI and the functionality are ready. Tests and fixes are pending
  • Malabia Town: the migration has started, but we still have some model issues.

Next steps

In September we plan to finish the DG Marketplace, VRoomway and Malabia town project. At the end of the month plan to stage the next scenes in the list.

Will this be eventually integrated into the Explorer code itself ?

Or is this a solution which could eventually just be dropped into the remaining SDK6 scenes deployed in DCL ?

The integration into explorers is up to each explorer. So far it鈥檚 already integrated in the Godot and Bevy explorer (Alternative explorer funded by the DAO). The new Foundation client hasn鈥檛 integrated yet, but they use it to generate the LODs lods-generator/scene-lod-entities-manifest-builder/src/logic/sceneFetcher.ts at 6085b578d3de889bf0fbf54477f9aa716954d042 路 decentraland/lods-generator 路 GitHub which enables to have the static representation of SDK6 scenes in the new explorer :slight_smile:

Is the Foundation planning on having something like that fully integrated into the new client ?
If not, why not ?

2 possible reason might be:

  • They want to discourage use of SDK6
  • Number of live SDK6 scenes might be insignificant it total sum

Personally, I don鈥檛 know of any live SDK6 scene in Genesis City that brings significant value to DCL, which would warrant the developer team鈥檚 efforts to integrate a SDK6 compatibility layer.
