Introduction
It’s that time of the month again! This is our final update for this grant. September marked a significant month for the Decentraland VR Client team, with vast improvements made, community-wide testing, and considerable advancements in our features. This month’s update represents the culmination of a persistent effort to optimize, enhance, and refine our VR experiences.
Highlights
-
Community-Wide Test: Partnering with the Decentraland DAO, we orchestrated a successful community-wide test that garnered positive feedback and valuable insights.
-
Enhancements on Android Video: Multiple challenges on the Android video front were surmounted. We’ve significantly improved the Android video capabilities, ensuring a smooth experience across various video formats. Furthermore, efforts were undertaken to dynamically detect video types and accommodate different stream types.
-
Startup Customization Menus: We introduced startup customization menus, providing users the ability to specify catalysts, startup coordinates, multithreading options, and more. This grants users greater control and ensures a tailored VR experience.
-
New Build on SideQuest: A new, enhanced build is now available on SideQuest. This release brought in additional startup options and integrated various improvements from the main Decentraland project.
-
Controller and UI Adjustments: The main menu button was shifted to the left controller’s menu button, enhancing usability. Plus, we have added the feature for the B button to trigger emotes, streamlining the UI navigation.
-
Webview and Open Source Exploration: Continued research into creating an open-source WebView, ensuring greater compatibility and smoother sign-ins.
Blockers
-
Certain video types on Android still prove to be a challenge, especially when stream links don’t include file extensions. However, we are continuously working on resolving these to ensure broad compatibility.
-
Known issues such as an inability to click on avatars on android builds and UI discrepancies in some parcels persist. The team is aware of these and is focused on resolving them in subsequent updates.
Next steps
September’s achievements exemplify the team’s relentless pursuit of excellence. While this marks our final update under the current grant, our commitment to refining and expanding the Decentraland VR experience remains unwavering. We are profoundly grateful for the community’s feedback, support, and belief in our vision. The journey continues, and we are excited about what the future holds. We hope to submit for another grant to continue improving upon the VR client. Do stay tuned!
