Caveats

  • Nov 2: we threw together a last minute cross-reality party to catch the crowd in Amsterdam for the Solana Breakpoint conference (outside our usual schedule). We were unable to get a projector to show DCL to the crowd and had to rely on laptops that we had in the corners to show attendees the digital crowd watching them. While this was a useful experiment at a new location, we’re omitting the attendance count from the total as the IRL/DCL integration was not to our standard.
  • Nov 29: We streamed live from the Immersive Tech Week metaverse conference as part of the closing drinks for the day. Attendance numbers were hard to get precise but we had large crowds moving through, stopping for a dance and drink. Was our best and larger performances yet with both VR musical performances and our Decentraland party projected onto a large screen (with wonderful reactions and engagement from crowd).

Blockers

We don’t have any blockers on delivering our grant deliverables. Yet over the past 2 months here’s some painpoints we wish to ease:

Artists wish to communicate with audience
Our artists wish to engage more with the crowd, but unless they have two laptops they often cannot stream and be in-world at the same time.

  • Investigate: Scott Moore on twitter demonstrated using DCL Cast to allow in-world chat via browser. Will see if this can be used via mobile and our scene despite not using DCL Cast for the stream.
  • Digital Temp Solution: In meantime, a member of our team will be available during digital shows and relay relevant chat messages to the artist.
  • IRL Solution: we already updated our IRL setup to provide artists with updates from the crowd via the in-world chat and twitter updates.

Artists struggle getting friends to join digital party
Our artists have found it difficult to communicate to their friends how to participate online. This limits our ability to onboard new users to decentraland through our artists recommending it to their friends.

  • Current Attempt: Our website https://innkeeper.link has a button to jump directly to our decentraland plot, but many of our artists and their friends are new to metaverse/wallets/etc.
  • Next Attempt: will make some material/content to easily share so our artists can help us onboard new members to decentraland. There’s already a wealth of knowledge that has been created, so we can start by curating into a sharable resource with the context of joining our party.

Next steps

This grant has enabled us to cover the routine so we can spend more time creating new opportunities to bring exciting content to Decentraland. Here’s some initiatives that we’ve spearheaded and plan to venture further into:

Better/More Physical Venues for IRL/DCL cross-reality parties

We’d like to provide a better location for our IRL guests and better visuals for our digital patrons. We’ve been scouting for some more locations in Amsterdam which have better visuals and dance floors. We’ll be experimenting from more locations in late December and expand from there. We have doubled our IRL/DCL parties from October to November and seeking these new collaborations to further increase the frequency. So far these have been our best experiences to demonstrating DCL and the metaverse to people who have only heard of it as a headline.

Exciting and new experimental performances

We’ve been collaborating with Patchworld VR to host live musical performances, performed entirely in VR (video) and streamed into Decentraland. Following continual excitement from each previous performances together, we’re planning and creating new performance and educational content to further push this new medium of VR Musical Performances. We hope to excite and lower the barriers for performers to experiment in this domain, with Decentraland becoming the place for crowds to see this content for the first time.
