Hi everyone,
In September the mobile team put stability first, after the market test showed us how the app behaves on a much wider range of phones. Three stability releases shipped in one week, and 1.14 cut loading times a lot. The Bevy web client had its biggest month so far, and the Foundation confirmed Bevy as the official web client for the future of the platform. We announced the Friendzone Buildathon winners, closed Grants Season 1, and set the Q4 direction together with the Foundation.
Scope: Sep 1–30
Living Roadmap: high-level goals, % complete, and short descriptions across hiring, projects, and funding.

iOS v1.13.0 to v1.14.1
62 PRs merged. We shipped 1.13.0 to 1.13.3, then 1.14.0 and the 1.14.1 hotfix.
Stability first
The market test brought a much wider range of phones into the app, and crashes went up. Most crashes came from a few patterns in how the app manages objects across async work, so we took two engineers off feature work and focused the sprint on them. 1.13.1, 1.13.2 and 1.13.3 shipped within a week, all for stability.
- Scenes, avatars, video and menus now own the objects they use across async calls, which removes a whole family of crashes (#2909, #2910, #2911)
- The app detects real memory pressure on Android (#2721), and the scene runner survives freed colliders and clock jumps (#2918)
- A malformed message length in the CRDT protocol is fixed (#2858), and sign-in requests use a corrected clock, so a phone with the wrong time can still log in (#2834)
- Players can now report a bug from inside the app, with up to three screenshots, and the report reaches our support team directly (#2779, #2906)
Faster loading in 1.14
1.14 brought the new optimized asset pipeline: shared textures, scene bundles and colliders that load only when needed (#2764). On a mid-range phone, Genesis Plaza now loads in about 10 seconds the first time and 5 seconds after that.
Spanish and Portuguese
The app is now available in Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, with a language selector (#2754, #2849). Most of the players from the market test speak one of them.
Redesigns
- New Social section with Friends, Requests and Nearby tabs, and a new navbar (#2792)
- New Notifications section (#2826), full-screen settings (#2864) and a redesigned interaction prompt (#2874)
- Pinch to zoom the camera, with the avatar centered and aiming from the crosshair (#2878)
- A landscape Discover panel in the navbar (#2971)
Getting players to come back
No paid campaign ran in September. We worked on what the market test told us was missing:
- An in-app review prompt on Android that shows only after five sessions and a positive action, like adding a friend (#2865)
- Push notifications sent from our server on Android (#2881), the base for the day 1, 3 and 7 reminders
- The link from an ad straight into a scene now works end to end on Android, which also opens the door to a referral program
Creator tools & SDK
- Graphics profiles with budgets for view distance, particles and lights (#2812), and scene limits for VFX emitters and light sources (#2815)
stopEmoteand emotes tied to the scene that started them (#2931), teleporting to another realm from a scene (#2897), and audio behaving the same as in the Unity client (#2801)
Team. We added a QA Engineer on September, focused on the mobile client.
Bevy Web Client
135 PRs merged, our highest month so far. 13 of them were on the multiplayer server.
Bevy is the official web client
The Foundation commited to support Bevy as the official web client for Decentraland based on perforamnce, download size and how fast we can develop on it. Even though the client is behind the Unity desktop client in terms of features and visual polish, we are committed to accelerate its development to get to the end of Q4 with a production-ready version.
Faster
The engine, the renderer and the compute work now run on separate workers instead of the browser’s main thread (#1346). Heavy work no longer blocks the page, and frame rates went up, with the biggest gains on mid and low-end machines.
Looks like Decentraland
A lot of September went into making the web client look and feel like the desktop client players know:
- Empty parcels now have terrain, grass, trees and rocks, and the edge of the world has cliffs, sand and sea (#1373, #1379, #1374)
- Same sun path and lighting as the Unity client, sky reflections, and shadow distance settings (#1377, #1401, #1396)
- The loading screen with its tips, the HUD sidebar and the backpack now match the production client (#1356, #1355, #1361)
- You can edit your profile (#1249), browse the marketplace from the menu (#1362) and see who is talking in voice chat (#1357)
Multiplayer server
-
Pulse starts with the session and follows the player across realms (#1288), and a quick return to a realm restores the other players right away (#1254)
-
Fixed a memory leak on the server and switched it to a faster memory allocator (#1281), and added limits on what server scenes can fetch (#1034)
-
Emote events now reach the server’s scene listeners on the Pulse side too (pulse #43)
-
Scenes get emote lifecycle events and
stopEmote(#1227), and upper-body emote masks (#1278) -
Field of view on virtual cameras (#1231), custom fonts on text and UI (#1263), and particles with gravity and changes over time (#1368, #1386)
-
Teleport requests carry their realm, so a scene can send a player into a World (#1210)
Governance
Wearables and emotes submission fee
Implementation continued with the Foundation teams, and the target is still mid-October. Most of our work went into the open-source wearable validator (repo), which had 43 PRs in September:
- It renders each item on both body shapes, and samples emotes at five moments plus a motion pass for wearables, so clipping and broken animations show up (#34)
- It is hardened against hostile files and links (#35, #44), and is published as a library (#42)
- It runs on its own server, with a site to review marketplace items and a history of every check (#40)
Governance dApp: a quiet month, with 2 maintenance PRs (#262, #263).
Q4 with the Foundation
In September we planned Q4 together with the Foundation, with one shared process: each team tracks its initiatives, dependencies between teams get solved in one meeting, and leads set priorities before kickoff. We agreed on a single North Star to hold for the next one to two years: creators making a living in Decentraland. Q4 work is organized under three pillars: Build, Get played and Earn.
Games & Content
Marsh Colony (103 PRs)
The MVP is live, and the game is in active development, with this phase closing at the beginning of October. September added a bath game, fetch with a charge bar and aiming, an ark, custom mobile controls, reward feedback, and fixes so other players see the pet you carry (#215, #187, #306, #305, #364, #266).
Cozy Farm (8 PRs)
Session analytics (#229, #233), unused controls hidden on mobile (#231) and gameplay fixes on crops, compost and the chicken feeder.
Dead Surge (2 PRs)
Comms & Community
Friendzone Buildathon results
- 209 registered and 50 eligible submissions. Last year’s Bring Your Vibe had 142 registered and 28 submissions, so finished work almost doubled.
- Of the 50 submissions, 19 came from builders outside our community, 18 from active creators, 8 from first-time creators and 5 from returning ones.
- Six workshops are recorded on YouTube, and the Show & Tell had 139 live viewers on X.
- The jury: Bay Backner and Nico Earnshaw from the Foundation, MetaRyuk from the DAO Council, and Agus Carriso and Giorgio Mendez from Regenesis Labs.
Winners were announced live in-world on September 23 and streamed to the community:
| Place | Experience | Prize | Play it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battle Zone | $3,000 in MANA | battlezone.dcl.eth | |
| Kitchen Chaos | $2,000 in MANA | kitchenchaos.dcl.eth | |
