People have paid premiums for what they believe to be Coastal property or edge of the map plots. It would be, if not unethical, another short-sighted choice that hurts invested users and creators by minting more land, which undermines the value of the existing plot locations.
What people paid to mint something in 2017 and what people have paid on secondary in the years since are two different things.
I don’t think anyone objects to the creation of content that fills out the map to make it square; I just don’t think that should come in the form of newly minted land.
There is no reason that people who develop clients can’t experiment with how to make the border of Decentraland exciting without making it a DAO discussion.

Hmm, I don’t fully agree, at least not when it comes to things that are directly tied to the foundations of the protocol. Clients should consume the protocol and build on top of it (expanding functionality through social features, UX improvements, creator tools, or rendering decisions) but they shouldn’t alter the core fundamentals of the project itself.
For example, in the mobile client we’re rendering Genesis City scenes as isolated islands to improve performance and create a more focused experience for users. But the underlying map still exists, you can still visit any parcel within Genesis City. We’re changing how you move through the world, not the world itself.
You have to have something on the border of the map. Unless I’m mistaken, that is not covered by the protocol. At one time, the foundation chose to have infinite land generate as you ran. Now they have the ocean, and some people are under the impression that in the future the Foundation will develop that border to be more beach-like (but I digress).
I agree that any experimentation on the border of Decentraland, by those developing clients, should not impact the content of the land within the minted boundary of Decentraland.
I think it could be a cool solution to the issue of DCL not being a square (or even a rectangle), if developers of clients were to add a nice park or some other installation that adds value to Decentraland, and those who own border property, while making the map a perfect square to account for the odd parts of Aetheria.
I get why you need to do this so that you can make something that will load on people’s phones, but this would also make it impossible to enjoy something like the community art week exhibition Canessa organized, which was dozens of scenes between a half-dozen Land owners. It would be cool to have a feature where you can link neighboring scenes together so the client can load them together. I imagine this is out of scope.
This is definitely a funny little “Peninsula” of land that for a long time I didn’t realize it existed. I don’t think it does harm having it there (except for those of us who want everything to be symmetrical, like myself).
I’m not super excited about adding more land to the map until we’ve effectively utilized the existing land we already have access to. I’d feel more comfortable if we’ve already maxed out building on the DAO owned land (And unused districts like the two at the bottom of the map) and we need more places to build. Until then, adding more parcels to the map could just magnify the unused land problem.
For those seaside owners, FYI the top of the map and right side of the map already has a land buffer, so it would not be taking anything away, just giving you neighbors in the existing empty land. (Land on the left and bottom side of the map ARE right along the ocean).
