[DAO:0729638] Protocol Squad - Alternative Explorers (Desktop, Mobile & VR)

by 0x83f9192d59b393c8789b55d446e5d4a77075c820 (ProtocolSquad#c820)

Should the following $226,500 grant in the Platform category be approved?

Abstract

We present this new proposal with the desire to continue developing alternatives to the Foundation clients, experimenting with and implementing new features requested by the community that can add value to the platform. In this way, we will also ensure decentralized clients that favor the distribution of technical knowledge, development experience, and the protocol itself, thus furthering Decentraland’s vision of collective ownership and open-source development.

226,500 USD in DAI

Project duration

6 months

Description

We prepared a more specified document for the Proposal due to character limitation with and introducation, the motivation and a Transparency section with the details on how we have spent the funds provided by the DAO until now: Protocol Squad - Alternative Explorers (Desktop, Mobile & VR) (Q4 2024 - Q1 2025) - Google Docs

We propose the following roadmap. Our focus will be on several key areas of development, which are divided into Protocol, Godot, and Bevy development.

Protocol Development:

1.1 Maintain Openness and Decentralization

We will continue developing alternative clients to reinforce Decentraland’s identity as an open and decentralized protocol. This ensures that Decentraland remains a true protocol that promotes decentralized ownership and development.

1.2 Collaboration with Decentraland Foundation

We will work closely with the Decentraland Foundation to ensure the protocol remains aligned with the necessary changes. We aim to create a consistent and resilient protocol that adapts to the community’s evolving needs.

1.3 Extend Protocol Functionality

We aim to expand the protocol to be fully VR-ready, enabling more sophisticated interactions and experiences across all platforms. We will also integrate features based on community and Content Creator feedback, ensuring the protocol supports more creative and immersive experiences. More details on Godot and Bevy implementations.

Please, we have provided details of the key points in each development, see them in the document!

Roadmap

Bevy Development:

Bevy’s development will be flexible and may be re-prioritized during the grant period depending on engagement with the Foundation and any blockers uncovered. The features we are currently anticipating (not in priority order) are described in the milestones.

Godot Development:

Godot’s development will also be flexible, it may be re-prioritized due the feedback reported by the stores.

Milestones

2025-04-30 - Godot - Mobile - Achieve iOS Publication
2025-04-30 - Godot - Explore New Distribution Channels for VR
2025-04-30 - Godot - Product improvements
2025-04-30 - Bevy - Desktop - Extend Protocol Functionality
2025-04-30 - Bevy - Desktop - Extend explorer functionality to incorporate existing features

Hi everyone,

If you have a minute to spare, we’d really appreciate hearing your reasoning behind the votes, whether for or against.

Regarding the BitcoinETF’s comment, it’s a valid point, and I’d like to address it:

  • Our previous grants had clear objectives, all of which have been successfully met. You can check our progress in the roadmap here, and the clients are available for download here.
Additionally, you can review how funds were allocated for each project in the transparency section of the following document. Each project was built from the scratch with a budget of under $260k over a year and a half, achieving protocol feature parity and pushing boundaries where possible.
  • In terms of the unified grant, our team works much more efficiently when operating as a cohesive unit rather than on separate grants. It also helps mitigate the risk of losing key talent and technical expertise.

Voted yes. After testing both the mobile client and VR firsthand, I recognized the importance of ensuring Decentraland remains aligned with open-source, decentralized development principles while also being prepared for mass mobile adoption.

When sharing scenes for others to explore on both computers and mobile devices, I noticed that many people don’t have high-performance computers with ample RAM or advanced graphics capabilities. However, they do often have the latest mobile phones. Therefore, it’s essential to have a mobile client updated with the latest features and optimized code, capable of supporting complex scenes smoothly to drive widespread adoption.

What’s the plan on releasing these things to the public?

If you can extend your question on what you mean by releasing and to the public, so I can give you a broader answer

We have a dev-stage cycle with releases after milestones, you can find the releases on our landing https://dclexplorer.com, and keep informed in our grant updates, X account and/or Discord.
Also we develop the both client publicly, you have the repos:

I am also interested in the timeline for mobile release. You have done great work in what I have seen so far. I am interested in the communication from one person to another via the phone app. Based on the current timeline I see the release may be soon. Is this accurate and the new proposal is just enhancements?

Yes, we’ll need to adjust the timeline since that task has already been addressed. :slightly_smiling_face: Also, the current title might not be entirely accurate. It would be better to rename it to something like “Officially Publish Releases for Mobile,” as this refers to creating official store pages in the Play Store and App Store. We’ve successfully done this for the Play Store, and we just have four remaining issues to fix for the App Store.

Regarding the feature you mentioned, it’s already in place. Players can see others connected in the same realm, interact through emotes, and use voice chat. However, if you’re referring to features like privately contacting friends (e.g., adding/removing/accepting/rejecting friends), these are currently being implemented in the Desktop Explorer (Bevy). Once that’s completed, it will be easy to adapt the codebase for Mobile :slightly_smiling_face:

I had the opportunity to test the alternative clients built by the Protocol Squad during the Regenesis Summit in Lisbon, and I must say, the experience was incredible. For a project aiming to grow as the protocol for building open metaverses, it’s essential to have multiple clients utilizing it—some might be fully open-source, others could involve proprietary software, and some might be tailored for mobile and VR, while others focus on desktop and web. That’s the beauty of Decentraland. A team like the Protocol Squad is crucial to ensuring the DCL protocol remains open, usable, and valuable for the community of builders. A huge (well, not really huge given my VP) YES from me!
